Avanos Medical Recalls The Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System
Avanos Medical is recalling Cortrak*2 Entry Access System. The FDA says that patients have been injured and killed due to nasogastric or the nasoenteric tube being misplaced. The recall currently comprises 629 devices which were sold throughout the United States.

Avanos marketing its Cortrak*2 Endural Access System is known for its screen-based visualizations of stomachs and small bowels, which assist in the placement medical feed tubes. Patients could suffer damage to their vocal cords, lungs, or trachea if a tube is incorrectly inserted. Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos Medical feeding tube According to the Avanos Medical recall notice there were 60 incidents of injury and 23 deaths in patients in 2015 due to the misplacement of feeding tubes for nasogastric patients using the CORTRAK* 2 Enteral Access System. Pneumothorax (collapsed lung), pneumothorax, perforation (a gap or hole within the lung's wall), pneumonia, and Pleural effusion (excess liquid in the chest cavity and the lungs) are some of the incidents.

Avanos Medical has presented a plan to update users' labeling, in order to verify the proper placement of Nasogastric (and nasal) tubes prior to using them.
