As we've mentioned, Minecraft with RTX's worlds are almost entirely path-traced, with lighting and effects that offer incredible levels of detail for the very best image quality that is possible. Here's a complete list of the major effects for those who are interested or simply need to learn more about the technology behind Minecraft and RTX.
Global Illumination
Precomputed lightmaps and image-based light Probes, Spherical Harmonics and Reflective Shadow Maps are used to illuminate games. Artist-placed lights can also be used to provide illumination in areas where the previous techniques do not work. While the results are impressive, there are some problems with the techniques employed. OCCITIES The most significant is that dynamic lighting doesn't reflect or illuminate beyond the area where it was directed.
Imagine a dark room with bright sunlight shining through a window. Traditional methods illuminate anything that is directly illuminated by light. However the areas that are illuminated don't reflect light and therefore do not illuminate the game elements around them.
Path tracing allows us to accurately model the dynamic indirect diffuse lighting that is reflected off surfaces in the scene. It also lets it interact with other effects that use ray-traced. Imagine, for instance, sunlight shining into a castle via stained glass windows that are multicolored and refracting to illuminate all corners of the room, reflecting off the shiny marble floor, and enhancing surrounding details, causing new shadows of contact hardening to be cast off objects.
