Here's how 'Minecraft' Creates Its Gigantic Worlds

Have you ever wondered how Minecraft can create massive worlds that are full of small details, such as elaborate cliff faces and waterfalls? PBS' Game/Show is more than willing to explain it in the latest video. As you'll see below Mojang's game relies on procedural generation, which automatically creates environments and objects that are both random, yet guided by rules that maintain a consistent logic. GAME-BOAT.COM Mountains are always rough and covered in snow, for example, while the low lands are typically full of trees and grass.



Perlin noise calculations are used to create rough textures for Minecraft. It starts out on a broad scale that paints an initial topographical map and adds "noise" through finer terrain details like lakes, shrubbery and animals. It has just enough freedom for unexpected delights like the intricate rock structure above. As in the real world, there's an incentive to find what's around the bend.



Procedurally-generated game content certainly isn't new. Spelunky and the Diablo series make use of it to keep their worlds current, while Borderlands uses it to generate unique weapons. It's essential for the seemingly endless amount of worlds in No Man's Sky. It's safest to say that Minecraft's dependence on math is what makes it special. Each playthrough is different and you might not have seen everything.
