'Minecraft Earth' will Shut down On June 30th

Just a little over a decade after bringing Minecraft Earth in the US, Microsoft announced this week that it will end the game in the coming year. Minecraft Earth players have until June 30, 2021, to play the game in augmented reality before Microsoft shuts down its servers and it's not available for download from app marketplaces.



Developer Mojang Studios blamed the coronavirus pandemic and the changes to daily life that have been brought about by it for the sudden shutdown. "Minecraft Earth was designed to allow playing with no restrictions and in a collaborative manner which have become nearly impossible in the current world situation," the studio said. Mojang, like Niantic's Pokemon Go, had modified the game to make it more accessible at home. Those changes clearly weren't enough.

- Minecraft (@Minecraft) 5 January, 2021 But if there's a silver lining in today's news, it's that Mojang plans to exit Minecraft Earth in style. Mojang has released a final update to Minecraft Earth. It includes modifications that "make your time on Minecraft Earth more fun." This update also removes real-money transactions, and significantly reduces the time players to construct and craft things within the game. It also offers players a chance to see all the content that Mojang was working on prior to the announcement today. The studio stated that they believe these changes will allow players to explore, craft, build, and share more while staying safe inside.



Microsoft will erase player data on July 1 after June 30th is over. If you have spent money on Minecraft Earth at any point during the life of the game, you'll be given an item that allows you to download the Bedrock version of Minecraft to your mobile device. For Microsoft it is definitely an unhappy conclusion for Minecraft Earth. The company had high expectations for the game when it was first showcased at WWDC 2019. The fact Minecraft Earth couldn't survive through the epidemic, despite all of Microsoft's resources at its disposal isn't a positive indication of the future of consumer AR applications.
