Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an uncomplicated game that is included) has a major new release out with Minetest 5.4.0 and is worth a second try.

As we have already mentioned in the release Candidate stage of the release, this version makes it much easier to momod small mod packs as well as entire games. Minetest had a way to browse and download them all directly in the game for a while however, it now will also download all of the dependencies mods require, making it vastly easier to download what you want and then put it into a game. It's no longer necessary to download one mod, and then search for all the bits it requires.

The built-in base game "Minetest Game" was also given some improvements. While it's pretty basic by its own, it can serve as a great base to showcase the engine and extend by adding mods. Minetest 5.4.0 now includes a crafting guide, five more wood variations, and environmental sounds for active furnaces and lava, as well as multiple bug fixes and translations. It continues to build on the steady and slow build-up into something bigger out of the box.

Other new features include the cross-hair changing when pointing at objects, bindable mouse buttons, name-tags for players now have a semi-transparent background, there's a caverns feature for the flat map generation as well as the "place" and "fig" keys are now freely configurable, lots of modding enhancements and numerous bugs fixes, such as the player not being able to access inventory of other players.

Really great to see this free and open source game engine and game working very well. According to the official server list, it appears like a large number of people play a variety of games with Minetest and there are hundreds online as of the time this article is published. Wow!

You can read the entire changelog here. More details are available on the Minetest website.
