Sony Ericsson to Showcase over 20 new Games Optimized for Xperia Play

One of the things we criticised in our Xperia Play review was the absence of games that are specifically tailored to the handheld's buttons. It's fair to mention that there are a number of new titles in the pipeline including some classics and others new, all of them optimized for this particular brand of button-mashing. Headline games include Minecraft (a port we've seen in action) as well as Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard and Battlefield Bad Company 2, both of which have been collecting headshots on iOS devices for a while in the past. Check out the press release after the break for the complete list of games, but don't expect anything in terms of pricing or availability. Those details will be announced at E3 next week, and the Xperia Play will have to stand out against the Sony NGP. We'll have to wait until the right moment to play around with vigor.



Sony Ericsson and Gameloft team together to launch Rainbow Six - Shadow Vanguard exclusively on the Xperia (tm). PLAY. More than 20 games will be displayed at E3 Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Shadow Vanguard in June and July.



London, June 2, 2011 – Sony Ericsson has teamed up with Gameloft again to offer an exclusive experience exclusively for its most popular gaming phone Xperia(tm) PLAY. This exclusive experience gives access to Tom Clancy's action-packed spy thriller shooter Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Shadow Vanguard, modified by Ubisoft. Xperia(tm) PLAY brings high-octane, international action games to the Android operating system, making full use of the smartphone’s exceptional graphic capabilities and game-changing pad. The Android version of the game, which is scheduled to launch on the 3rd of June, will be available only to Xperia(tm) PLAY players in Western Europe throughout June and July.

The game is based on the well-known Ubisoft video game franchise Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six is one of the most popular video game brands. It's a high-energy tactical first-person shooter game that is based on a fictional international counter-terrorist unit known as "Rainbow." The game is more focused on stealth and tactics rather than firepower. Weapons (including assault rifles, high-caliber handguns and uniforms) are chosen to match the abilities of each operative and their mission.

Consumers in Western Europe with an Xperia(tm) Play will be able download the free Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Shadow Vanguard during June and July 2011. During this time , the game will be available for Android only on the Sony Ericsson Xperia(tm) PLAY.



In addition, Sony Ericsson also announces 20 new games, including 10 exclusive titles that are optimized for Xperia(tm) PLAY. The new games, many of which will be featured at the world's most prestigious games exhibition, E3, June 7-9.



The new titles are appealing to a variety of players and occasions, from innovative, multi-player online games (MMOs) to thrilling titles to brand new, visually rich casual content.



One of the titles announced today is Minecraft(tm) the highly anticipated game from the Swedish indie developer Mojang. Minecraft(tm) is among the fastest growing game franchises in the history of gaming with over 8 million registered players to date, and more than 50k new players joining each day.



Sony Ericsson has confirmed that new games from Sony Computer Entertainment's classic PlayStation 1 titles will soon be available on Xperia(tm).



Sony Ericsson supports the Android ecosystem through its partnerships with major industry players such as Unity and Havok. This collaboration is helping to create an ever-growing ecosystem. Sony Ericsson will launch a programme known as "Stand Out from the crowd" to help and discover innovative game developers. This program lets game developers be part of the Xperia (tm) PLAY story and give their games the exposure they need. Sony Ericsson will attend E3 in Los Angeles from June 7-9 to demonstrate the Xperia(tm), PLAY and other games on booth 713. The new games that were announced today will be released in the next few months. Details about the timeframe and exclusiveness of the new games will be announced during E3 Week and closer to the time of launch.
