I'm talking about a win. conditon ends the game. You strive for it. It is imposed from without.
It also serves a purpose by providing a structure within which we can (I want to emphasize inevitably) create our own winning conditions. My boss was building a temple that had an entrance that resembled an enormous cock. He didn't have to build it, and there was nothing to do after it was completed. Other than him showing me. He had a goal, and he set it to succeed, despite any obstacles. He was able to complete the task, but passed away. He learnt from the process. All that fun stuff, that happened.
I guess if you're wedded to the idea that games do need a win condition it's possible to claim that Minecraft is merely a frame that gives rise to such. It's not an insignificant theoretical error, when so many things create fun in the same way. Like Electroplankton. These are also known as games. They're like games when we play them, even though they do require our engagement. We don't deny that they are play-to-plays that require the audience's involvement. They only get done when they're played.
I have also argued with vigor (and when drunk) that Minecraft has a fantastic story. It builds it generatively and you are a part of it. However, this does not diminish the skill with Which Notch developed it. It's a step forward but.
