Mojang Reassures Minecraft Fans about Microsoft Deal

Mojang reassures Minecraft fans about Microsoft deal

The boss of Minecraft-maker Mojang has reassured fans worried about what might take place when Microsoft übernimms the company.

In September, in the middle of September, Microsoft announced a $2.5bn (PS1.5bn), deal to buy Mojang.

However, Vu Bui, chief operating officer of Mojang said that there were no plans to change the game, or to change what players can do with it.

He said that feedback from players remains essential to help improve the game.

"Nothing's really changing," said Mr Bui. " We don't plan on any changes and, of course I'm not able to discuss the deal and I don't know everything but we're here, the game's still in play and business is as normal."

Mojang has always aimed to preserve the initial motivation that made the game so popular, he explained.

"Maintaining that authentic culture is a real challenge," he said. "It's an attitude that respects the community and allows the community to do what they want with the game and make it theirs.

"It is absolutely our intention to continue, just as it has always been, to keep doing this," he told the BBC in an interview at London's Olympia exhibition centre , where he was giving a keynote speech at the Brand Licensing Europe trade show.

Mr Bui acknowledged that the deal was "still in the making" but said Mojang's intention was to continue working closely with its vast community of players.

Many block-building enthusiasts have expressed concern about what could happen if Microsoft gets full control.

Markus Persson (aka Notch), is the Minecraft inventor. He wrote about the reasons he was approaching Microsoft. He wrote that it was too much for him to handle and was becoming an burden.

"I can't be responsible for something this huge," he wrote soon after details of the deal were announced.

"It's not about money," he added. "It's all about my sanity."

Mr. Bui said that there would definitely be some changes in the near future but they would be based on the input, feedback and comments of fans.

The current system in which Minecraft developers share their work for a long time before they add it to the site would be maintained.

"We don't hide our features," he said.

This transparency would also be evident during the time Mojang began to reveal the new titles developers were working on, even though the studio was not yet ready to discuss specifics, he said.

Mojang will allow players to try out early versions of a title and assist the developers in improving it, Mr Bui said.

Similar approaches were used in Minecraft. Mojang wanted the similar process to be replicated because it was proven to benefit developers when they worked on their project.

It was not about replicating the success of Minecraft to create another title that was equally popular. Bui said it was more about trust in the overall plan.

"We believe in this model," he said. "Regardless of their art form individuals should invest their time and energy into whatever they believe in, regardless of what happens.

"That's a noble effort," he added.

In the same way, he said, Mojang believed that it was a mistake to attempt to control or control the Minecraft community and dictate what can and cannot be done in the game.

He also said it was better to move out of the way.

Mr Bui said that people are most creative when they are given the freedom to do what they like. Although you must give them some guidelines but they'll be able to come with better ideas than we could.
