Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and an uncomplicated game that is included) has a major new version that comes with Minetest 5.4.0 and is worth a second go.
As we discussed in the Release Candidate stage one of the most important features for users in this release is vastly easier modding with both small mod packs and complete games. PLUSSOC Minetest was previously a way for players to browse and download mods directly from the game. However, it now also downloads all dependencies mods require making it simpler to locate what you require and load it into the game. It's no longer necessary to download one mod and then look for the components it requires.
A few improvements were also made to the built-in game "Minetest Game". While quite bare-bones by itself, it does serve as a great base to show off the engine and extend with modifications. With Minetest 5.4.0 it now comes with crafting guides, 5 additional wood types, environmental sounds for lava and active furnaces, as well as new translations and multiple bug fixes. It continues to grow slowly and slowly into something a bit larger out of the box.
Other options include the ability to change the cross-hair when you point at objects, free-binding mouse buttons, name tags for players now have semi-transparent backgrounds, a caverns feature to generate flat maps, and the 'place' and 'fig keys are freely configured. There are numerous bugs fixed, including the inability of players to gain access to the inventories of other players.
Pictured Minetest 5.4.0 with a few modifications.
It's great to witness this open source and free game engine and game doing very well. Going by the official server list, looks like a lot of players regularly play games using Minetest and there are hundreds online as of the time this article is published. Wow!
You can check out the complete changelog here. Find out more on the Minetest website.
