New Minecraft Skins With Default Minecraft Skins Bring Back Steve's Beard

Mojang has changed the default Minecraft skins to Steve and Alex - and Minecraft Steve's beard has come back after years sporting a clean-shaven style. The iconic blue-shirted avatar of the crafting game, Minecraft Steve's original avatar featured an unnatural brown goatee that some players mistakenly thought was a beaming smile - but it was removed in an attempt to create a gender-neutral appearance for the sandbox game's default character.



Minecraft Alex was introduced in 2014 as a default skin. With a green top and longer red hair tied into a ponytail, Alex offers a slightly more feminine appearance than Steve's model. Helen Chiang, the Microsoft studio head for Minecraft has stated in a 2018 interview that the company was looking to combat gender stereotypes and present Alex and Steve with the same physical attributes and capabilities.



With two choices available to players, the decision has been taken to bring back Steve's famous goatee. A post on the Minecraft subreddit highlighted the new skins - which also enhance the shading on Alex to give the second character model an authentic three-dimensional appearance. The reaction so far is mostly one of joy, with fans particularly excited to see Steve's old bearded look returning.



Many commenters say that they're content that Steve is now back to the look given in most official artwork, including in the Nintendo brawler Super Smash Bros Ultimate. "I can understand why they removed it initially," said the Reddit comment that received the most votes. "But it was clearly part of Steve's style, which Mojang seems to be in agreement with." We are glad to see it back after all these years."



Minecraft lead artist Jasper Boerstra took to Twitter to express his opinion on the new skin and stated, "I'm happy you like the return of the beard!" Boerstra also notes that classic banding and 'pillow shading' techniques are employed in the new skins "to give a little of the OG look," but asks players to comment on whether this decision is an appropriate one or not.
