After Minecraft Says no to NFTs, NFT Worlds Vows to Create its own Game

Mojang was in the news yesterday when it said in clear and unambiguous terms, that NFTs are not a good fit in Minecraft (opens in a new tab). This is a good thing for gamers but not for those who have already made a commitment to using blockchain technology in games such as NFT Worlds.

"NFT Worlds," a completely decentralized, completely customizable and community driven, play-to-ear gaming platform where world owners can create unlimited metaverse experiences or games for players or exclusive communities within the worlds they control," its website (opens new tab).

"Currently using Minecraft and its sprawling open-source ecosystem, NFT Worlds builds on the foundation of a decade's worth of open source development within the Minecraft community. It radically extends it to create completely new types of 3D voxel-based, decentralized gaming metaverses that are backed by the Ethereum blockchain."

What that means, basically is that it can support custom Minecraft servers that allow players to purchase virtual land parcels and earn (and spend) cryptocurrency. It's the kind of hybrid system that Mojang's blockchain policy seems specifically designed to shut down. Launcher It certainly had an impact the price of $WRLD (opens in a new tab) was soaring after the announcement by the studio.

In response to Mojang's latest policy, NFT Worlds has issued a statement (opens in a new tab) in which it denounces Mojang and Minecraft as having "no regard for builders, creators and players," and vowing to make its own game to take over the game.

"We're developing a brand new game and platform based on many of the core mechanics of Minecraft but with the advancement of technology and active development Minecraft has been missing for years," NFT Worlds said. "This is not a remake of an open source Minecraft version, which would violate the EULA or even risk legal action, this is completely from the ground up. The players will also be able to observe a brand image change that is more friendly to players as part of the transition.

The new game will have an "playstyle appearance, look, and feel" similar to Minecraft, NFT Worlds said it will also feature performance optimizations, graphics enhancements, and new mechanics that will deliver "a more affordable, accessible, and enjoyable playing experience." It will be free for all players, and "completely untethered from the policies that Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft." In addition it will also be compatible with older Minecraft server plugins, which means that when the time comes to change platforms content creators will be able to make the move without much fuss and effort.

Making an even better Minecraft than Minecraft (while maintaining compatibility with Minecraft) is an awfully huge undertaking, and one that would invite some immediate and rigorous investigation from Microsoft however, NFT Worlds doesn't have many options. Mojang has effectively closed the door on its business model, but a massive switch to a brand new game would leave the existing users, and everything they've built so far, in the cold. The only way to keep the wheels spinning is to create something that functions as Minecraft but not actually Minecraft. This isn't an easy task.

In the more immediate future, NFT Worlds said it will make changes to its launcher and play pages in order to draw in new players who aren't interested in the cryptocurrency angle. It also laid out some intense, high stakes options for the future of NFT Worlds as a battle for both the philosophical as well as technological soul of the internet.

"Microsoft has declared that they will always act in the best interests of their shareholders and balance sheet but at the expense of player experience, innovation and creators," NFT Worlds said. "We believe an open, free, and a more evolved version of Minecraft that Minecraft brought to the world will be the best option for developers, creators, and ultimately gamers.

"We fight for a future where every participant benefits from the ecosystem's contributions. We realize this is a huge undertaking."

I've reached out to Microsoft for comment on the NFT Worlds plan and will update when I get an answer.
