The Warner Bros. Minecraft movie has been given a new director... again. Variety reports that Peter Sollett has been hired to write and direct the long-awaited film. It was originally scheduled to release in May this year. However, the production has been hit with delays due to director changes. The film was originally directed by Rob McElhenney (It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia) however, the project was cancelled in August. He had also taken the reins from Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) who quit in 2014.
Sollett directed 2002's Raising Victor Vargas and 2008's Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. He has also been recognized for his work on Five Feet High and Rising. Mojang, Minecraft's original developer, is reportedly still involved in the production of the film.
Warner Bros. scored the rights to the Minecraft movie back in 2014, and the issue is whether Minecraft can still pull in the audience it might have years ago. It's unclear when the film might be released, but with a director who is now in the saddle again, maybe it can get back on the right path.
