Minecraft will Join Microsoft

Mojang's team will join Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios behind the blockbuster franchises such as "Halo," "Forza," "Fable" and many more. Microsoft's investments in mobile and cloud technologies will allow "Minecraft" players to enjoy richer and faster worlds with more powerful tools for development, and more opportunities to connect with the "Minecraft" community.

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion.



Mojang:



Minecraft has evolved from a simple game into an immense project. Though we're massively happy with the progress Minecraft has grown into However, it wasn't our intention for it to get this large.



As you may already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder of Mojang. He's decided that he doesn't want to be the owner of a company of immense global importance. In the past, he's attempted to develop smaller projects however the pressure of managing Minecraft became too for him to handle. Mojang was his only choice. He'll continue to do cool stuff though. Don't worry about that.



There are only a handful of potential buyers with the funds to expand Minecraft to the size it deserves. Since 2012, we have been working closely with Microsoft and were awed by their dedication to our game's development. We're confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in an awesome way.

I don't see myself as a real game developer. I create games for enjoyable and I am a gamer and enjoy programming, but I don't make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits and I don't set out to make them change the world. Minecraft definitely became a huge hit and people are telling me it's changed the game. I never meant to change anything in the first place. It's certainly gratifying and to be gradually placed in a public spotlight is fascinating.

Minecraft is the most amazing game I've ever played. It's a blend of sandbox, exploration world-builder and role-playing. It has a "conclusion" of kind (that you must discover on your own), but it doesn't end. You can play on your own or with other players and even run your own Minecraft server and invite only your friends to play on it. It's not difficult to spend countless hours playing Minecraft and millions of players already have.

It's obvious to me. Microsoft have determined that should Apple goes hi-res with their retina screens and operating system, the only way Microsoft can differentiate itself is to "bet the entire company on red" and go lo-lo-res.

Minecraft is the biggest thing to happen to games since Pokemon. Everyone plays the game, and If Minecraft is managed well it will remain one of the most popular well-known, popular, and influential franchises for at least another ten years.



Microsoft considers games to be extremely important, both because they are a major driver for the new Windows PCs and Windows licenses, as well as because of the Xbox. Microsoft has tried to create games vaguely like Minecraft in the past (Viva Pinata, Kodu, Project Spark) and have generally failed.



Sony already owns the Little Pig Planet franchise, and Nintendo is beginning to enter the "creative games where you design things, not just consume stuff" field with Mario Maker for the Wii U. I believe most companies think that these types of games will become increasingly important. I also believe they're right.
