Diablo, Warcraft, and Overwatch to Receive their Own Warzone Ecosystems

Diablo, Warcraft, and Overwatch to create their own Warzone ecosystems

Activision-Blizzard has announced that they will adapt all of its major franchises to its own Warzone-like business model ecosystems.
Warzone is the most important thing Activision has done. Free-to-play mode allows premium Call of Duty games to be integrated with cross-progression, crossplay and a cross–SKU framework. Additionally, it includes microtransactions in the game. This model will carry over to all other franchises from Activision Blizzard including big IPs such as Diablo, Warcraft, and Overwatch.

Blizzard games will change and expanding. Activision has stepped up its efforts to implement its new four-part strategy: new games engagement models, live services, and monetization mobile ports. The plan will be implemented across all of the Activision-Blizzard franchises. This means every big franchise from Call of Duty, Diablo, Warcraft, and Overwatch will all get mobile games and brand new engagement hooks. Right now, no hook is sharper than Warzone--the F2P sensation has been able to double CoD revenue and has topped $3.9 billion in annual IP revenues.

Activision revealed during its Q4'20 earnings call that Warzone's cross game ecosystem will be modified to other mainline IPs. Expect to see Diablo, Warcraft, and especially Overwatch get its own Warzone-esque model. While the details will vary for each game, such as Diablo Immortal possibly tying into Diablo IV with exclusive items but the core of the game will remain the same: multiple access points that can be combined and each have their own way to earn money.

Activision earned $4.8 billion in 2020 from mTX. 57 percent of the company's revenues.

Here's an illustration of how it could look:

Diablo

Diablo Immortal (mobile) Diablo IV (premium game on consoles and PC) Diablo Heroes (F2P on consoles and PC)

Overwatch

Overwatch Go (mobile) Overwatch 2 (premium game on PC and consoles) Overwatch 1 (F2P on consoles and PC)

Warcraft

Warcraft RTS (mobile with WoW crossover items) World of Warcraft (premium PC expansions) Warcraft Heroes F2P on consoles and computers

Activision-Blizzard's main goal is to get 1 billion active players in its games. Multiple F2P access points on consoles, PCs, and mobile are critical parts of this strategy. So far, the Warzone model has helped Activision make more cash than it has before-In fact, in 2020, it was able to earn more than $8 billion, which is an record for all time..

Here's what Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in the conference call:

"We have initiatives in place to improve the social aspects of all our key franchises, but we're only scratching the boundaries of what's possible with social interaction between our franchises. Call of Duty is also has established a clear model for franchise-based innovation and we're applying this strategy across our other core franchises to increase reach, engagement and player investment.

"As I mentioned, we had roughly 400 million active monthly players in 2020, and we're accelerating our path to achieve 1 billion players as we implement the Call of Duty framework across our other wholly owned franchises. We always begin with inspiration and inspiration. We provide great gaming by providing free access to all players with mobile access, as well as constant streaming of premium content and in-game content.

We expect to see significant growth in 2022 because of the planned publication of new content across several platforms. We are confident that the execution against our plans will allow us to realize the full potential of our portfolio of fully owned intellectual property and provide superior shareholder returns like we have done for the last three decades.
