Betting the underdog Lions, you are "taking" six points, and they can lose by five or fewer, or win the game outright, and you have a winning bet. If the Bears win by exactly six, both sides "push" and all bets are returned. If the final score is 42, it's a push. Otherwise, the under or over will win.

Money line bet – If you don't want to bet the point spread, which is a great option, but you may not be interested, the money line offers another option. In this case, you can lay or take odds relative the dollar on your team winning, or losing.

You will bet a lot to win some favorites if you like favorites. The money line is always listed to the right side of the point spread in a sportsbook's odds board. In the above example, the money line would probably be Chicago -250 and Detroit +200. For Chicago to win, you would need to wager $250. A $100 bet on Detroit would yield $200.

Parlays - These bets are very popular, especially with novice and amateur bettors. They offer a chance to bet a small amount, but potentially earn a large payout. They are best avoided. Parlays allow you to wager on multiple games at once, according to the casino's predetermined payout scale. Each game on a parlay must win for the bet to be a winner.

The potential payouts may look appealing, but many sports bettors dream of making nearly $10,000 by capturing a $10, 10-teamer at odds of 850/1. Look for teams that are performing better than expected during the first part of a season to find your best value. While novice handicappers tend to focus on the performance of a team in the past year, in these times of salary caps and constant roster turnover, it is not possible for teams to perform at the same level in consecutive years. In addition, teams that performed well the previous year are no longer a good value because you are laying a much higher price with them, especially at the beginning of the next season. You can start your handicapping analysis before the season begins to maximize the benefits of the first few weeks.

4. Find the best gambling lines and odds.

The line is the last place you should look for value. There are hundreds of top sports gambling sites, with more opening every season. Handicapping lines and point spreads can vary between sportsbooks. Having multiple places to shop for the best lines offer bettors an extra point on many games.
