Minecraft's Ray-tracing Beta is Available on PC this Week

Ten years have passed since the game's release, and Minecraft continues to be one of the most played games of our time and now, it's getting a makeover with Ray Tracing. This is the most advanced form of gaming graphics. It mimics the physical behavior and light to give games high-quality cinematic rendering.

NVIDIA announced that it was developing realistic visuals for Minecraft in the previous year. They will now be available to Windows players from April 16th. In beta, the release will offer the same Minecraft single-player experience but with reflections that are ray-traced, shadows, lighting and customized, realistic materials. Additionally, you'll be able to explore six brand new RTX worlds created by community creators. These worlds comprise Aquatic Adventure, Imagination Island and Neon District, are available for free on the Minecraft Marketplace to gamers with Minecraft Windows 10.

Elsewhere, the visually-focused release brings physically-based rendering (PBR) which means that surfaces will appear more realistic, whether they're rough matte stone or glossy smooth ice, and to help with the work required to run all this in the background, there's NVIDIA's DLSS 2.0. This latest version of NVIDIA's AI upscaler utilizes RTX tensor cores to take a lower-res image and upscale it to the desired resolution, supposedly doing better than the initial feature that was launched with NVIDIA's RTX cards.

Of course, because it is in beta, you should expect a few issues to arise at this point. The beta doesn't include some features, like multiplayer realms, third-party servers, or cross-play. There are still design problems and dimensions that aren't optimized for the ray-tracing process. In addition, banners are black and slime mob has no face - the kind of things which will be fixed in due course. The official release date hasn't yet been announced. Developers want to hear from the community about the beta release.
