British Museum to be Digitally Recreated In Minecraft

British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter

23 September 2014

The British Museum in London - complete with all of its exhibits - is to be recreated in the video game Minecraft.

This project is part of the Museum of the Future program, which aims at increasing the institution's appeal.

Numerous real-world organizations have made maps in Minecraft such as Ordnance Survey, the Danish government and Ordnance Survey. They want to make young people aware of their work.

Last week, Minecraft was sold to Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokesperson for the museum stated that the project was still in "an initial planning phase" and that the "build" is not yet started.

She added that the organisation plans to seek out people from the general public to help in the "construction".

More than six million people visit the museum every year and holds eight million items

Its natural history collection were relocated to South Kensington in 1880s, where it would become the Natural History Museum.

Its instantly easily identifiable Great Court was designed by Lord Foster and is the largest covered public space in Europe.

One British Museum employee posted details of the project on the social media site Reddit and asked for volunteers to get involved.

He received enthusiastic feedback from Minecraft fans from all over the across the globe.

Initial stages

The initial step will be to digitally design the Great Court and facade of the building.

The institution hopes this stage will be before the public discussion titled Changing public dialogues with museum collections in the digital age. The debate will take place on October 16.

Ovum's Ovum gaming analyst Ed Barton told the BBC that the British Museum's shift towards Minecraft will make it "perceived to be a fun activity" and also serve as an educational tool for a younger public.

He explained, "It's the digital version of building the British Museum using Lego." It must be constructed brick by brick.

He also said that the company deserves praise for crowdsourcing it "as this turns it into something that is collaborative" and could further draw in youngsters Minecraft fans.

"What is a great idea it could be to be asked to create the Elgin Marbles in Minecraft," he said.

People who are interested in donating to the British Museum's project can sign up on Reddit.
