Duncan Jones looks at his experience directing 2016's Warcraft as a crucial lesson in learning, even if Duncan Jones continues to call the event as a "political minefield" two years later.



Jones is currently promoting his latest Netflix film, Mute, and spoke to SyFy about his experience as a filmmaker. He briefly spoke about Warcraft which did well in the overseas box office however, it was not as well received by critics. The director admitted that he tried to make the film he hoped to make, but ended up being the victim of several revisions that, according to him coincided with Legendary Pictures going through a tumultuous time.



"I think there was a lot of rewriting in that, over the process of making the film was really, really difficult and at times disheartening," Jones said. "Just having to make compromises and changes just due to the politics and the nature of the film. So, that was a real heart wrencher ... at the time, it was pretty traumatizing."



Jones said it came down to "studio politics." Legendary was sold to Universal by Warner Bros., but it was later sold to Universal. Wanda one of the biggest Chinese conglomerates, purchased the studio once more. Wanda has a significant influence on Hollywood films, particularly blockbusters like Warcraft. Ownership changes wrought devastation on the production team and their partners, who moved between owners several times during the duration of filming.



It was a catastrophe on the production side. Jones was still talking to Blizzard about how the film was developing throughout the whole ordeal.

"We were working with Blizzard, who understandably were very careful about what happened in the film because their bread and butter was Warcraft, which was bringing an estimated billion dollars each year for them," Jones said. So, whatever we did with the film was likely to be small potatoes compared to how crucial the game was for them.



"So it was really an extremely active political landscape."



There wasn't a lot of negativity however. Jones said he views Warcraft as an essential and crucial experience in how to manage studios and their politics. Jones's career has not been affected by the movie. The director has plenty on his plate, including his newest film, Mute, which is currently being shown on Netflix.
