Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely will not" follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Mojang Studios, Minecraft developers, banned NFT integrations on Wednesday as it believes that NFTs are speculative and scarcity, risks of exclusion and scams are against the game's principles.

The move was considered highly controversial within the NFT community, while it has been met with praise by the community of crypto-skeptic players.

The company of Sweeney is the one responsible for Fortnite the battle royale game that's very popular. It's also thought of as a Metaverse platform. While Epic Games isn't necessarily pro-crypto or NFTs, the CEO stated that the firm isn't looking to enforce any views on the subject on its users:

Developers should be free to design their games and you can decide whether or not you want to play them. I believe that operating system makers shouldn't be interfering in any way by imposing their ideas on others. We won't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. Sweeney replied that Epic Games makes "editorial" judgements, but NFTs are not currently under their remit.

"A store could decide to avoid making such decisions and play anything that is legal, or opt to draw a line at the accepted norms of the day as we do, or allow only games that align with the personal beliefs of the owner," he said.

The NFT ban by Mojang Studios has left one particular project dubbed NFT Worlds with a major problem to solve, given that it was built on one of Minecraft's open source servers.

Play-to-earn (P2E), an open-source platform for play-to-earn (P2E) offers an entire NFT and crypto-based ecosystem built around. The NFTs it uses generate 51,000 Ether (ETH) which is $80.8 million worth of trading volume at the time. However the NFT floor price has fallen from 3.33 Ethereum down to 1.01 ETH since news dropped. Meanwhile, its native token WRLD plunged 55% in the same time frame.

Following the Mojang announcement the NFT Worlds team stated it is currently "brainstorming solutions" on how to move forward. The team also said that it is working to connect with Minecraft to explore if a solution is possible. As an alternative, the team suggested a switch to a GameFi platform or a Minecraft-like game engine.
