Minecraft Says no to NFTs because they Create 'scarcity And Exclusion'

Minecraft players Minecraft won't be permitted to purchase in-game content like worlds, persona items, skins, and other mods with NFTs.



Minecraft, the most-sold video game, doesn't support NFTs. They "create a scenario where the haves and nots"



In a highly worded article posted on the Minecraft website yesterday (20 July) the developer Mojang Studios said that the incorporation of NFTs could be incompatible with the game's principles.



"NFTs and other blockchain technologies create digital ownership based on exclusion and scarcity which is in contradiction to Minecraft values of inclusion and creativity and playing with each other," the company wrote.



"The speculative pricing of NFTs and the investment mentality associated with them take the focus off of the game and encourages profiteering. We believe that this is not in harmony with long-term joy, and success for our players."



Minecraft said the statement was made in response to comments from members of the community who wanted clarifications on the studio's stance on NFTs and blockchain.



This means that Minecraft unlike other virtual world games, does not allow blockchain integrations in its client or server applications. The NFTs can't be used in game to create content, such as worlds, skins and persona items, as well as other mods.



Mojang, a Microsoft-owned company has also stated that it is concerned about third-party NFTs. These NFTs aren't reliable and could result in a cost to those who buy them. It offered scenarios where third-party NFT managers could "disappear without notice" or NFTs could be "sold at fraudulently or artificially inflated prices".



"We recognise that creation inside our game is of great value, and we strive to provide a platform in which those values are acknowledged."



Online gaming has seen an increase in interest in blockchain technologies such as NFTs. The Robinson Music This was also discussed at Future Human earlier in the year.



GameStop and other companies have also expressed their confidence in NFTs and GameStop has launched its own NFT marketplace.



However other companies aren't making a big investment yet. EA's CEO had previously said that NFTs and blockchain could be the future of gaming, but he recently added: "Right now, it's not something we're fighting to the wall".
