Effective methods for self-studying Japanese
Don't worry if you are a new Japanese learner and are wondering: can I really self-study Japanese?, you are not alone. My first thought was that it was insane to think that anyone could learn one of the hardest languages in the world without real teachers.

After completing college, I decided to challenge myself with a tough goal, and I ended up reaching it in some way. Despite specializing in Japanese for over a year, I managed to pass the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level N2 after only 1 year of self-studying. Let me explain to you exactly how I learned Japanese all by myself and passed the JLPT N2 with a score of 97 / 180 (the passing score is 90).

A lot of people think that learning the hiragana and katakana charts is the hard part, but actually learning the 2000 Kanji characters is probably the most challenging part. For the first month of my 1-year journal, I decided to temporarily skip learning Kanji because it gave me a headache. Considering how Blog For Pet Lover use hangul as a writing system, why don't Japanese use only hiragana? We could save everyone a lot of time and trouble if we did that. In the beginning, I hated Kanji, but later I discovered that it was my favorite.

There is a famous book by Heisig called Remembering the Kanji. All Japanese learners who want to learn Kanji faster and easier will benefit from this book. In this exercise, you learn how to not forget the Kanji characters by using your imagination to create a story or picture for them. In spite of the fact that there is no guarantee that this book will work for everyone or that you will become an expert on Chinese characters, it is surely one of the best choices out of hundreds of books on the topic.

There are some downsides to this book, including that you cannot get the on and kun reading for the characters. In my opinion, the author wants us to focus on learning how to remember character and story because he knows that we can easily learn to read each character elsewhere. A serious learner shouldn't have much trouble going online and finding the on and kun readings of each character.

Write as many sentences and short essays as you can to practice writing the Kanji. Repetition is key to remembering a word so that it appears in a variety of sentences. Additionally, you should type your sentences and have someone correct your grammar errors.

You can download audio, video, and pdf lessons from this site. A better Japanese learning site won't probably be found online. There are four categories of lessons: Absolute Beginner, Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced. In each category, there are several seasons, each containing at least 20 lessons. Learn online or offline by downloading the pdf and mp3 files.
