Minecraft Says "No" To NFTs

Mojang Studios, the makers of the ever-popular Minecraft, is adopting a model from the classic U.S. anti-drugs playbook, however it appears "Just Say No" is much more effective in blockchain-based money-making schemes than it ever did for drugs.

The blog of the Microsoft-owned studio stated on Wednesday that NFTs within Minecraft were "generally not something we'd allow and support." The blog also stated that it was changing its Minecraft Usage Guides to clarify that blockchain technology is not allowed to be integrated into the Minecraft client. In addition, NFTs that are built on in-game content (e.g items, skins and mods) are not able to be used to generate NFTs.

The developers noted that blockchain technology's notion of digital ownership is based on "scarcity and exclusion" which "does not reflect Minecraft values of inclusion in the creative process and playing together." They also said that third party NFTs may end up costing players who buy them, since they depend on those who develop blockchain technology "who could vanish without notice."

This is exactly what happened. A NFT project named Blockverse that was believed to be built to serve the Minecraft universe, scammed an estimated $1.2 million from the early investors who purchased Blockverse characters in NFT form on websites like OpenSeas. The project also included the cryptocurrency $Diamond. The project creators took all the money they had invested and deleted the website, Discord and Twitter accounts. This is commonly referred to as"rug pull" or "rug pull" and is very common in the crypto world.

While the Minecraft developers have left it open for blockchain technology to be added in the near future however, they said they have no plans to introduce blockchain technology into Minecraft as of now.

It's likely that some projects that were working to integrate Minecraft into the blockchain were not as thrilled by the news. NFT Worlds, a company that uses blockchain to allow users to purchase NFTs for their digital environment-mostly Minecraft-were affected hard. The company issued an Discord message on its Twitter account, stating that they were working to find solutions to the Minecraft EULA changes and that they were thinking of changing their strategy to create a Minecraft-like game platform.

As of August 2021 , according to figures from Statista, Minecraft is still being played by 141 million players every month, despite the game being almost 13 years old. Helen Chiang, the Minecraft studio's director, stated to Edge Magazine in a 2019 interview that the average age for Minecraft players was 24. Chiang said that the game was created to be kid-friendly. The ERSB rating for Minecraft players is 10 years old and up. Having a money-making investment scheme integrated into the client does raise warnings and the possibility of abuse, especially when you make children vulnerable. Edge was told by Chiang that "We should be precise and straightforward about how we plan on making money from the game."

Roblox is another game designed toward children, has taken on monetization and in-game promotions specifically designed for children. Users are incentivized to spend Roblux on items in the game while visiting worlds specifically made to promote products from brands like Vans, Nike, and Ralph Lauren. The game's creators updated their community standards last year to make an unclear reference to NFTs in game. Roblox users aren't permitted to pay compensation by acting as models for assets.
