Building the (Minecraft) lost city of Babylon

Regular reports hit my radar of the incredible work being undertaken by global kids as they grow up to be knowledgeable and knowledgeable about their gaming activities. Many kids, aided by experienced elders (parents and peers) are engaging in this exciting platform. Teachers are as well helping their students accomplish amazing feats.

This stunning Minecraft build - Babylon in a new era for our children's futures is amazing! Amazing is not only referring to building in a gaming environment. I'm talking about literacy and communications digital citizenship, story telling, and creativity and global culture. It takes commitment on the part of adults to teach students this way.

Minecraft in education is a growing phenomenon and educators are rushing to find ways to integrate Minecraft into the learning culture of their schools. To be honest, Minecraft is also turning into an extremely dangerous minefield of its own in the 'grown-up world' (consultant warning) - and therefore making it critically important that we connect with quality users with solid experience and knowledge of best practices in Minecraft rather than consulting with experts.

Project Mist

Donelle Batty's Project Mist is one of my favourite Australian leaders. She is so involved with her children each day that it's something we wish for all of our children. Donelle has been operating Project M.I.S.T. (Minecraft In School Transforming Education) for what seems to be an long time. Her students have had engaging learning experiences. GMods experience in Minecraft is a great example!

The year's Minecraft experience was awe-inspiring. TITANLAUNCHER The teamwork, the effort, and the creativity I observed were truly impressive. In the class, I had the opportunity to meet with kids who share the same interests as I do, making friendships throughout the year. Cooperation was the biggest highlight; When there was ridiculous numbers of mobs and a high death count we sheltered and shared supplies. If someone needed help with creating or building something, it was always a pleasure to teach them how to do so. I've also learned more about the importance of my appearance on the internet and how I present myself to users of the web. Presentation is crucial and your first impression of you is everything. If you're acting like an online tool, people will come across you and think: "Wow, that person appears rude and inconsiderate" This could be the last time they visit your website/sever/ profile.

Recently, I read Donelle's tweet regarding #ProjectMIST's 2014 launch.

2014 #ProjectMIST is set to begin, and it requires a committed community to complete this! http://t.co/HwGMrUlHI5 #minecraft @natbott42

- Donelle Batty (@dbatty1) March 21, 2014

She reminded us that Minecraft is a shared experience as are the many stages of learning involved in gaining Minecraft experience. Donelle is without doubt a world-class leader, and will be away from her hometown in Tasmania for her Hardie Fellow (Info re Hardie Fellowship and the recipients for 2013-14).

Donelle also brought back the fantastic work done by Jo Kay who is an amazing colleague who I have had the privilege of working with over the years on various projects. Jo is currently supporting and building our work in the Master of Education, Knowledge Networks and Digital Innovation degree here at CSU. We don't use the normal LMS however, we have created our own version for the degree at present.

So in much the same way Donelle explains:

We are really lucky at ProjectMIST because we have one person who has been with us from the beginning and is always there even at 12:04am. Jo Kay is there to support the students when I'm not. Students appreciate her support and have built replicas of her avatars on their own servers. One young man made this happen the other night after he locked himself out of his server. This student has recently been accepted to the Massively @ Jokaydia Minecraft Guild and is very happy to be able build, learn and explore with other players from all over of the world.

If you are an educator, parent, or just someone who wants to give kids the chance to play Minecraft I suggest you visit Massively @ Jokaydia.

The Massively @ jokaydia Guild Website - a community that is supported by jokaydia.com - provides kids and their parents with spaces based on games to collaborate, learn and play!

The project is designed for children aged 4-16yrs who are interested in developing digital media skills, exploring their imagination and enhancing their online social skills. We currently use Minecraft, a video game Minecraft to provide a secure whitelisted server, as well as a range of activities which encourage kids to choose their own fun learning pathways and adventures.

You can't do better than this! Babylon was created by a single student!

Donelle can be found on Twitter @dbatty1 or Jo @JoKay. You will also see student Nat in the TedEX video below.
