Coronavirus: Minecraft Offers free Lessons for Children

Coronavirus: Minecraft offers free lessons to children

24 March 2020

Minecraft is offering its educational worlds at no cost to pupils who cannot attend school due the coronavirus pandemic.

The 12 digital lessons are available for download until June 30th.

These include tours of the International Space Station as well as the inside of a human's eyes. They can be "played by yourself or with your parents or friends".

The worlds allow you to make and solve puzzles and also build difficult projects.

Other lessons include:

Puzzle games to teach students about how code is written and to think like programmers

A tour of Washington DC's most historic sites, including the White House, the Pentagon and the Lincoln Memorial

A game that involves generating energy from alternative sources of energy, such as wind and nuclear

In a blog, Microsoft, Minecraft's owner, stated that educators around the world are doing all they can to provide digital education to half a billion kids who are unable to attend school because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

"This isn't an easy task, but we want to help keep young minds sharpened and engaged."

Many educational materials that were previously available to schools to purchase only are now available for free for a brief time to give parents access to the lessons.

In the meantime, the website Hegarty Maths, which remains a subscription-only site, has seen unprecedented demand as pupils log on in large numbers.

It said it was doing all it could to ensure stability, and added more servers.
