iLands is a game for free for iPhone and iPad which is available for iOS 4.3 or later. iLands Premium can be purchased for US $3.99. If you're not wanting to shell out $6.99 for Minecraft - Pocket Edition, then this is the game for you. You begin with a brand-new block world that you can build on and modify how you want to.
The graphics are pretty good in comparison to Minecraft the Pocket Edition, but they could be better. The D-pad on the left side of the screen allows strafing, moving forward and backwards. Sometimes, the D-pad can be a bit difficult to use. It takes some time to get used to, but it's doable for the majority of the time. The control on your right is only for jumping up and is very effective. The experience of maneuvering the terrain was a bit slow, especially when you had to jump over obstacles. Sometimes, the touch targets would not respond unless I tapped several times. For instance, when I used the X button to smash dirt, grass or blocks, it will take a more than two taps. The game would crash frequently when I was in the middle of building and exploring my Solo world.
A base of building materials is given to you. These materials include grass, sand and bricks. The steel skeleton cubes are exclusive to iLands since I've not seen anything like them in Minecraft - Pocket Edition. Steel skeleton blocks are awesome because they allow you to build a solid structure and still enjoying daylight, which is not the case when building with solid blocks. I really enjoyed using cobblestone to construct houses and roads. You can unlock the stones using locks by purchasing the full version. For this review , I played the trial version.
If you're looking to play the survival mode, which is similar to Minecraft - Pocket Edition, you will not find it in the free version of iLands. I'm unsure it something like survival is available in the full paid version. I tend to play in creative mode all the time in Minecraft - Pocket Edition anyway, so I was not averse to that in iLands.

If you love building blocks in a virtual environment, iLands is a worthwhile free download. I would be interested to learn what the paid version will allow you to do, other than unlock building materials. I was awed by building structures and whatever else my imagination decided to dream up.
