September NPD: Grand Theft Auto 5 Sales Infuse Industry with Growth [UpdateSeptember NPD: Grand Theft Auto 5 Sales Boost Industry

Everyone, this is wonderful news! The NPD Group reports that the video game industry's performance in the retail sector was up by 27 percent year-over-year during the month of September: $1.07 billion this year as opposed to $848 million last year.

As is expected, the bulk of the increased revenue came from the software segment which is also known as "where all the Grand Theft Auto 5 cash is stored." September saw a 52 percent increase in the physical sales of portable and console software, which was an increase of $497.5 million over the same period last fiscal year. GTA 5 understandably tops the list of September's 10 best-selling games followed by Madden NFL 25 and NBA 2k14.

The period's hardware sales resulted in $183.2million thirteen percent less than the September 2012 numbers. The Nintendo 3DS was the most popular product in the category for five months. Wii U sales increased more than 200 percent in August. However, Nintendo did not provide any numbers on how many Wii U boxes this translates to.

According to Liam Callahan, NPD Group analyst the PlayStation 3 broke the Xbox 360’s long-running streak of sales and was the most popular console during that period. This was due in large part to the PlayStation 3's Grand Theft Auto 5 bundle.

The Accessories segment, which includes gift cards, digital currency vouchers, Disney Infinity/Skylanders figures, and other products, was basically stagnant year-on-year, registering only an increase of 2 percent in sales, which came to $142.3 million.

Update: Microsoft has commented, noting that the company sold 80 million Xbox 360s to retailers across the globe in September. The console sales totalled $401.2 million. In the absence of a way to state that the Xbox 360 was the No. top-selling console last month, Microsoft instead says that it was the most popular console in the US in 2013. The clever phraseology and team.
