How to find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.17 and earlier
If you're still playing Minecraft 1.17 or older You can find Diamond Ore within every Overworld biome in the Y-levels between 1-15.
They most often are born between levels between 5 and 12.
These are the top levels to increase your chances of finding Diamonds.
No matter what version of Minecraft you're playing on, Diamonds will spawn in small veins that can be up to 9 blocks at a time, although often you'll see larger veins composed of multiple veins touching each one. Even at the appropriate levels, Diamonds are pretty rare.
Best method for mining Diamonds in Minecraft
Diamond Ore can only be mined using an Iron Pickaxe
or better. As of 1.18, Diamonds are far less common in open spaces like caves, so to maximise your chances of finding Diamonds in Minecraft you should strip-mine in straight lines across all directions.
Dig down to level 57 and construct a 2-block-tall tunnel that runs in all directions. This is the best way to mine Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19. Then start to mine out to either side in more 2x1 tunnels, leaving a two-block gap between each tunnel.
If you're satisfied that you have extracted all Diamonds from the level, you can begin the process until you reach level 53. If you mine this way at both level -57 and 53, you'll be able to see all Diamonds that form between levels -58 and -51. This will give you the greatest concentration of Diamonds without running into blocks of Bedrock that may otherwise hinder the strip-mining process.
This method works with Minecraft 1.17 and earlier. However levels 6 and 10 are required.
A Water Bucket is an excellent idea for mining. Lava pockets are fairly common at these levels. Be sure to carry plenty of torchlights that will illuminate your path and prevent mobs from spawning in your tunnels. You can also illuminate your way with Night Vision potions - though this won't stop mobs from creating.
