Minecraft Game Adds Ordnance Survey GB Terrain Data

Minecraft game adds Ordnance Survey GB terrain data By Matthew Wall Technology reporter, BBC News

23 September 2013

Minecraft, the wildly popular video game that combines monsters and building, can now incorporate precise Ordnance Survey terrain data of Great Britain in its blockwork virtual world.

The game's 33,000,000 players have the ability to create worlds on top of geographically accurate landscapes that cover 224,000 km (86,000 miles) of Britain.

Joseph Braybrook, an intern with OS's Innovation Labs, created the GB Minecraft world in just two weeks.

It utilizes OS OpenData products for free.

Graham Dunlop, OS Innovation Lab Manager, stated that "we believe we've constructed the biggest Minecraft world ever" based on real-world data.

"The map that was created demonstrates the enormous potential of Minecraft not only for geography and computer technology in schools but also for the wide range of OS OpenData applications."

Minecraft was created in 2009 by Swede Markus "Notch", and is an online world comprised of cubes made from different materials like sand, rock, and lava.

Players can work together to build shelters, construct things from raw materials, and fight off various monsters.

More than 22 billion Minecraft blocks are stored in the OS GB world.

After downloading the map to Minecraft the players are able to enter the 3D virtual world via OS's headoffice in Southampton. From there, they can recreate real-life features such as Stonehenge or imagine buildings like Hogwarts castle.

OS Terrain 50 and OS VectorMap are OS map products that combine to create a 3D model overlayed with features such as water roads, woodlands, and roads.

You can design your own structures on top.

As OS is the GB's national mapping authority, its data covers the mainland and its surrounding islands, but it does not include Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man or Channel Islands.
