Developer Creates a Wonderful Programming Font Based On Minecraft

North Carolina-based developer Idrees Hassan loves Minecraft so that he has recently designed a monospaced typeface for programming that is based on the typeface in the highly acclaimed video game. The result, Monocraft, gives programmers the feeling of playing Minecraft without the use of any game assets.

"To be honest, I created this font because I thought it would be fun to discover how fonts worked," Hassan told Ars. IGRALNI "Existing Minecraft fonts were missing several tiny details, like proper kerning and pixel size, so I figured I'd create my own. After that, there was nothing stopping me from taking it to the next level and turning it into a proper programming font. Plus, now I can write Minecraft plugins in a Minecraft font!"

Hassan created the Minecraft font to be used for development purposes. He added serifs to make letters such as "i" and 'l easier to identify, created new programming characters and improved the arrow characters to make it easier to read. (Ligature characters combine popular strings of characters used in operations such as "!=" into one new character, but they aren't always popular among developers.)

Monocraft can be downloaded from GitHub for free (get Monocraft.otf on the Releases Page). It isn't supported by Microsoft or Mojang and should be considered a fan-project. It's compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux as an OpenType font. To install it on Windows simply right-click the font file and choose "Install." On an Mac Double-click the font file and select "Install Font" in the Font Book window that appears.

Hassan previously made a faithful copy of the Minecraft font, which uses variable spacing just like the font in Minecraft. It's available on GitHub as well.

Markus "Notch", the Minecraft creator, first created the Minecraft font in an earlier game called Legend of the Chambered. This was in 2008. The Minecraft typeface incorporates retro pixel art that is reminiscent of 8-bit and 16-bit console games and was a perfect match for Notch's minimalist style of art. It's now a great font for developers from all over the world.
