Health Effects of EMF Radiation

RF-EMF can cause DNA damage
The exposure to electromagnetic fields created by humans (EMFs) is associated with DNA damage and other negative health consequences. EMFs can affect the intracellular ionic levels that are crucial to maintain a cell's electrochemical balance. In turn, this can alter the balance of cell metabolism, resulting in DNA damage. Additionally exposure to EMFs is also associated with an increase in the production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Exposure to RF-EMF radiation has been associated with changes in male germ cell development. This results in the development of germ cells into spermatozoa, as well as functional maturation as the spermatozoa travel through the epididymis. To study the effects of RF-EMF on the development of male germ cells, a specifically-designed waveguide machine was designed for the purpose of exposing unrestrained mice to RF-EME at 2.2 W/kg.

In a study that was conducted recently, researchers discovered that exposure to RF-EME causes oxidative DNA damage in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation was increased by 18% after a week of treatment, and by 23% after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

However, RF-EMF radiation is not yet recognized as a true carcinogen. But, several studies have found that exposure to RF-EMF can affect the integrity of DNA in range of cell lines. In one such study, scientists subjected Vero cells with an EMF that was 100Hz, for 45 minutes. They assessed DNA damage for 48 hours after exposure to determine if the exposure affected DNA integrity.

The effect of RF-EMF on tissue heating
While the effects of RF EMF are typically believed to have thermal origins, some studies have demonstrated that non-thermal effects are also observed. These effects may account for some of the unresolved issues in epidemiological studies on EMF hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting a systematic review.

The non-thermal effects of RF-EMF could be mediated by the cell membrane. This is a field where research has been extensively investigated. Particularly the electrochemical properties of cell membranes has been investigated. Current understanding suggests that energy from RF-EMF greater than 1 MHz is transmitted to the tissue through dielectric and ionic dissipation. The theoretical studies have indicated that the energy transfer to tissues could be up to 200 kV/m.


The electric properties of tissue are controlled by the composition and distribution of water molecules, ions, and other molecules within the body. This determines how absorbent RF EMR is by different tissues. Organs with greater conductivity are likely to absorb more of the field and cause more of an impact. This is the reason why the amount of heat generated by tissue doesn't increase continuously between the outside and inside however, it is more prevalent in hot areas. Bone and fatty tissue are less prone to RF heating than other tissues, because they are low in water content.

The depth of penetration of electromagnetic fields is determined by the strength and frequency that the electromagnetic field has. Muscle tissue absorbs more field energies than the other tissue and converts it to heat more efficiently. Usually, the depth of penetration for RF EMF is determined by millimeters (mm). But, the higher the frequency, the shallower the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF EMF can alter the blood-brain-barrier change sleep patterns as well as neurotransmitter levels. Research suggests that EMF exposure increases erythrocyte membrane permeability, which may alter the BBB and also increase calcium ion efflux. Moreover, the presence of a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer in the brain has also been linked to an increase in the permeability and permeability of the BBB.
