So what is it that makes Minecraft So Popular?

Sorry, "Fortnite" fans - "Minecraft" continues to dominate the market, just as it has for years. Helen Chiang, the head of the "Minecraft" studios spoke to Business Insider by phone this week. "Minecraft "Minecraft" is an uncommon case of a game with "long legs" - it continues to sell for years in the industry of video games that is driven by hits where sales charts are often designed like a hockey stick.

The cultural juggernaut known as "Minecraft" has been around for more than 10 years.



Despite other major games such as "Fortnite", "Roblox" and "Roblox," "Minecraft" is still dominating.



As as of this week, the game has more than 112 million players per month.



This is a rise of over over 20 million players since the last time Microsoft made the announcement in October of 2018 - an incredibly large growth in players, especially considering that the game has been in play for more than 10 years. The number includes players across gaming consoles, computers, mobile devices, and the education-focused version of this game.



Not surprising "Minecraft" although it is available for free on many platforms, isn't free.



The game was purchased by the tens of million of "Minecraft" players who added the game to their collection over the past year, whether it was directly in a store, as part of Microsoft's Game Pass subscription service, or digitally.

Early success has persisted

Since its first release, the game has been a huge hit. "Minecraft" was a work-in progress game created by Markus "NotchPersson. Persson. It was a simple game with minimal graphics and controls. It was only available on PC. It was susceptible to break because it was an incomplete game being developed by one person.



And yet millions of people purchased and played the first version of "Minecraft."



When Microsoft bought the game in 2014 for $2.5 billion the tech industry was stunned and puzzled by the purchase.



But clearly , that early success has remained under Microsoft's care across the past five years.



"What we find is that it's a game that players keep returning to," Helen Chiang, "Minecraft" studio director said to Business Insider in a phone interview this week. It might not always be the most popular, as there are many great games out however it is one that players are happy to revisit.





Why "Minecraft" has been such a hit

So why "Minecraft so well-known?"
