The radiation RF-EMF causes DNA damage, tissue heating, and disrupt the blood-brain barrier. These effects are real, and ARPANSA is actively engaged in discussions with EHS group, the medical professionals, and researchers. ARPANSA will continue to examine research regarding the health impacts of EMF radiation.
RF-EMF causes DNA damage
exposed to electromagnetic fields that are created by man (EMFs) can cause DNA damage, as well as other negative health consequences. EMFs can disrupt intracellular ionic concentrations, which are vital to maintain a cell's electrochemical balance. This can disrupt cell homeostasis, resulting to DNA damage. Additionally, exposure to EMFs is also linked to an overproduction of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).
The exposure to radiation from RF-EMF has been linked with alterations in the male germ cell's development. This results in the transformation of germ cells into spermatozoa, as well functioning maturation when the spermatozoa move throughout the epididymis. To investigate the effects of RF-EMF on male germ cell development, a specially-built waveguide machine was designed to expose non-restrained mice to RF EME in the range of 2.2 W/kg.
In a recent study, researchers have discovered exposure to RF-EME causes the oxidation of DNA in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation increased by 18% following an entire week of treatment and by 23 percent after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).
However Proteck'd Apparel that RF-EMF radiation isn't yet recognized as a true carcinogen. But, numerous studies have shown that RF-EMF exposure can impair the integrity of DNA in variety of cell types. In one of these studies researchers were exposed Vero cells with an EMF that was 100Hz, for about 45 minutes. They evaluated DNA damage 48 hours after exposure to determine if the exposure had a negative effect on DNA integrity.
The RF-EMF effect causes the heating of tissues
Although the effects of RF EMF are generally believed to have thermal origins, a few studies have shown that non-thermal influences are also observed. These may be the reason for some of the unsolved issues in epidemiological studies of EMF hypersensitivity. This is why it is crucial to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting a systematic review.
Non-thermal effects from RF-EMF could occur on the cell's membrane. This is a field which has already been thoroughly examined. Particularly the electrochemical properties of cell membranes has been investigated. Current understanding suggests that RF-EMF energy higher than 1 MHz is transmitted to the tissue via dielectric dissipation and ionic discharge. Studies of the theory have suggested that the energy transferred to the tissue could be as high as 200 kV/m.
The electric properties of tissue are regulated through the distribution and composition of water molecules, and other molecules inside the body. This determines how well absorbed RF EMR is by different tissues. The tissues with the highest conductivity tend to absorb more of the EMR field and produce more of an impact. This is the reason the degree of heating in tissues is not constant as it moves from the exterior to the body, but occurs in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissues are less susceptible to heating by RF as compared to other tissues, since they have a low water content.
The intensity of penetration of the electromagnetic field depends on the frequency and strength of the field. Muscle tissue is more able to absorb field energies than the other tissue, and converts it to heat more effectively. Typically the penetration depth for RF EMF is determined in millimeters (mm). The higher the frequency, the more shallow the penetration.
RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF-EMF can alter the blood-brain-barrier changing sleep patterns as well as neurotransmitter levels. In addition, the effects that EMF in brain activities are associated with neurodegenerative disorders. For example, EMF from mobile phones could affect the electroencephalogram's activity and sleep patterns, and the actions of nitric Oxide and xanthin oxidase.
Researchers from the Vienna University have studied the effects of RF-EMF exposure to brain cells. They also studied what effects ELF EMF on brain system. Although the cellular mechanisms that are involved aren't fully known, there is a clear association between ELF-EMF exposure and myelin depletion. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. However, there are known methods to regenerate myelin inside the brain.
Researchers have found that exposure to the frequency of 900 MHz EMF increased the permeability of the BBB and caused an increase in the signs of neuronal injury in rodents. They also observed an increase in the release of neuronal albumin. Further, they found the following: after about 30 min of exposure at 900 MHz 99mTcMIBI increased its permeation to the cerebral cortex. But, this effect did not occur when using Evans blue-based injections.
Despite these findings, RF-EMF has no clear method for disrupting the BBB. Evidence suggests that non-thermal EMF exposure may increase erythrocyte cell membrane permeability, which could influence the BBB and increase the efflux of calcium ions. Furthermore, the presence a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer in the brain has also been associated with an increase in the permeability and permeability of the BBB.
