Minecraft Survival Mode Preview

Here's a glimpse of Minecraft's Survival Mode that paid players will be able to play in just a week (September 1st). There's been a lot added since the first time we wrote about the game, including swimming cave pigs. That's right, swimming cave pigs. They are also fond of flesh but only if it's in Hot Pockets.

- Behemoth Holy crap. This just reminded me of how small I am on this earth, for this is proof that Notch is a god. He invented Minecraft and will rest on the seventh day. Indonesia?



Wiivn is better, but I don't like the idea that slower-destroyed bricks and the limitations of construction are merged... It's beginning to look like the standard mmo.



- MasterShake What Survival Mode is it? It does not even have Wiivn's health bar.

It is more beneficial to have a build mode and an survival mode. In this mode, you are able to only dig a few items and have to crawl through the dungeons that others have created.



" ngajoe Man...I was excited. IGRALNI.COM I was thinking of Stranded 2 when it said "survival mode". That was a great survival mode!



- Nicholas Lee I guess it's just me I'm still unable to "get" this game.



-- Eagle Guys, Notch is still not in the Sandbox mode. If any of you actually read his website, you'll find that he's creating survival mode, zombie siege modes as well as zombie siege mode. and keeping the sandbox mode. The game is in beta at the moment, and is only three months old. It's not yet a game but it's an toy. Notch is still working on the game's numerous modes. :P



- Malasdair I believe that Minecraft will be awesome in the next year. Is he using a pay-now-to-help-me-develop format?



The citricsquid is basically Malasdair. Pre-orders have allowed him to switch to working in Minecraft for 60% of the time - the other 40% for his IRL "outside of his home" job, since he'd be insane working on his own all the time. So yes we're paying him to dev it more :D



- Gutter @ Nicholas Lee: It's not a game however I don't believe it is. We aren't crazy.



FISH I wish the art was less muddy and pixelated.



It would be fantastic if it had a cleaner design like the megaman legends.



Can the game allow custom textures? That would be awesome. id create one.



- Tim L. I hold a patent on the words "Mine", "Craft", and "Scott's Mother" and you're all being legally sued.



- Nobody I have never liked the super pixelated style of art in games that are indie. Unless it serves a real reason in the game the only thing it's doing is exhausting the eyes.



OK, you don't look like a typical game, I'm sure of it; but now you appear like every other poorly rendered indie game out there.



Sinoth I find the textures that are pixelized very tasty.



ngajoe Concur with sinoth. Hurrah for teh Pixels!



- Schwerpunk I've not thought about the graphic style. It just seems to work.



And Notch has said he will release a DRM-free downloadable version which means you could swap out the texture files that are included in the same way.



The game is a fantastic illustration of the importance for players to be able to perform their tasks to Notch.



- Anon Presenting the Dungeons and Levers Expansion Pack



+ Dungeon Mode. Similar to Survival, except you're unable to destroy walls or craft objects. + Programmable Tiles. Pressure plates, levers, doors. Plus, more mobs. Plus more useful items. (Potions? Teleporter stones? Keys?) + Official format for public levels + Play on either player-generated levels or randomly generated levels + 100% for all players who have purchased the game!



- contra Looks great. While I didnt really have the patience to enjoy creating things in the beta sandbox it's still fascinating to take a look. Also I hope the music in the video is in the game cause it fit perfectly and I'm getting bored of the chiptunes.



-- Sparky I am convinced that there are a million amazing ideas out there that must be investigated every time I play this game.



(P.S. - I agree with Fish regarding the intentionally low resolution textures. However, that's purely subjective.



This build appears more polished than the one I built before. Keep up the excellent work!



FISH What I mean is that textures should be maintained at the same resolution, however removed and used with less colors.



Low-res is excellent but there's more to it than the low resolution. Every pixel counts. Every pixel is important. They don't have any weight as of now.



- Sparky I can see what you're saying about the textures and I'm with you. Sorry I'm sorry if my words weren't precise. Megaman Legends is an excellent example of a game that uses low resolution and low color depth textures, but isn't deliberately cluttered or unclear. It has a wide range of solid colors as well as nice hand-pixelled details.
