I'd like pose a question to Shamus Shamus and your readers: how do you know if Minecraft prior to 1.0/.8/9, an actual game?

Let me explain. IE was used on a computer to have fun. What is/was it a gaming program? My opinion is that games are composed of rules, goals and structures that are integral to the core gameplay.

Terraria is a game similar to minecraft. It features bosses and loot, and also a more complicated and interesting crafting system. It's more like a toy than a game. Toys are more creative, and often collaborative, and do not have the rules and goals that make a game, one.

Let's take a look at some real games and toys.

Chess is a sport in which you must outwit your opponent using superior tactics and take down his King. Each player plays according to the rules.

Lego's is a plaything that lets you create simple structures and express creativity. The goal is to build it by yourself.

DnD is a game which you try to live as long as possible, while earning money, while also playing a character. It is organized according to clearly defined rules that govern its gameplay. Such as that of a d20 roll which determines each action in the game.

Barbies and other play-toys can be a means for a young person to express their teenage dreams about becoming a mature adult. There aren't any rules that define the actions, and no general goal.

Football is a sport where players try to move a ball along a scrimmage line to score a goal on the opposing side of the field. Each player is assigned a position that is governed by unique rules, with consequences for those who break them in the form of fouls.

My question about Minecraft is: What is the goal? With Minecraft 1.0 you can beat the dragon. But before that, where are the real goals of the game beyond the goals you've set for yourself? Minecraft is more of a leisure device which the players make into a game, rather than an actual game. Go [direction] is a great illustration of this. It is the players who are trying to accomplish their goals as an toy, but without the fundamental gameplay mechanic.

You could argue that this is a strength, I'm asking for argumentative arguments about why it's a sport. It doesn't matter whether it's good or not. It's clear that it's a great toy.

Although you could argue that Minecraft is a game that is death-focused, it is mostly irrelevant because Minecraft isn't a game with the right gravitas that can deal with death in meaningful ways beyond the fact that you're teleported. Even another similar genre game(pure Sandbox) The Sims covered death in a manner with more consequences, when a Sim died, you lost that Sim for ever. Your aim was to keep Sims alive and cater the necessities of their lives for to the maximum extent possible.

EDIT: Damn, I uploaded it before I was at my ease.

It is possible to argue that living for as long as is possible is the goal of the game, to which my response is, resources are plentiful and tools are easy to come from, and the free resurrection results in a very lax mechanic for death. It's almost ridiculous. It is also possible for the player to completely turn off death anywhere simply by turning the game off completely. This is a clear indication of this being a primarily game created by the player. This is not a controlled gaming structure.
