Composition and release[edit]

In 2011, Rosenfeld released

Minecraft - Volume Alpha

. [7] For the next release, the composer was again given full creative control over the music that would be implemented as part of

Minecraft

November 2013

Music Update

. [8]

The mostly ambient album has a darker, more mellow tone than its predecessor. [55 Rosenfeld admits that the record is "extremely diverse" and is "much more percussive, melodic, and progressive" than Volume Alpha. The average track on Volume Beta is longer than the previous album[4[4] ] - at the time of its release, it was his longest work to date. [10]

Volume Beta also contains the music from nine collectible discs from Minecraft. The music is a stark musical contrast from the soundtrack, these discs typically rely on synthesisers and drums. [12]

In August 2020, the record label Ghostly released the first physical versions of the album, in LP and CD formats. The album's artwork includes a dark 3D model of a block of grass taken from Minecraft, surrounded on the edges by a larger cube of orange and black. Lenticular printing can be applied on certain vinyl pressings to enhance the depth of the blocks and highlight the grass's inner part. [14]

Critical reception [editCritical reception[edit

Online publication

Digital Trends

The album was praised for its moving "beyond pieces that are 'peaceful' or 'sad' and creates tracks such as "'Taswell' and "Kyoto' that feel like distinct performances". [15] Richard McDonald of music blog

Original Sound Version

The album was described as "an incredible achievement". [16]

The Los Angeles Times wrote that the album "showcases C418's ability to create greater, more diverse and sonic ambience". [17]
