A Minecraft modder has added new game-related issues for players to address in the form of climate change. Nick Porillo's GlobalWarming mod alters the atmosphere according to specific actions, like smelting ores. As climate change becomes more prevalent and temperatures rise, temperatures will also rise. This will result in increased carbon emissions, which could trigger extreme storms, forest fires and a decrease in snowfall.
Planting trees to absorb carbon dioxide can help combat the effects of climate change. To combat the issue on a bigger scale, you can purchase carbon offsets, which gives other players a tree-planting bounty to complete -- that reflects one of the mod's themes of working together to fight climate change.
"If the majority of players aren't willing to be carbon-neutral in the way they play, then the carbon score will increase during the game. Porillo explained to Motherboard that players will begin paying back the 'debt' they've incurred after the damage has been done. "The idea is that players put in a little more effort at the beginning, so that they don't release a lot of smoke, and they can save the cost of the final price."
He plans to add more features, like a scorecard that lets you see who the least carbon-neutral players are, figuring your carbon footprint, and adding methane as a third greenhouse gas. This mod is compatible with Minecraft Server Java Edition. 2c1c It is available for download from GitHub.
