Yesterday, you may have read some news stories on other sites about an issue with downloaded Minecraft: Java Edition skins and concerns that this could lead to viruses on your computer.
This issue has been completed, but we wanted to provide an explanation of what happened and the measures we've implemented to protect our community.
Anyone who is a Minecraft: Java Edition player can upload their own custom skin in PNG file format to our Webservice at minecraft.net. This will be displayed on their character in-game. PNG files may contain things other than an image including metadata, which provides information about the software that developed it, when it was made, who created it, etc. This means that PNG files could be created that contained code in this inert part of the skin file. This code could be generated but it could not be read or run by the game.
Although your antivirus software may detect the code and warn you about it, the code is unable to run on its own. Additionally, even you did find the code inside the file and chose to run it, your antivirus software should detect and stop the attempt.
