Microsoft Reveals 'Minecraft is home to an Astonishing 112 million Monthly Players

It's been obvious to anyone who's been paying to the news that Minecraft has been seeing an increase in popularity recently, but now we actually can quantify it to a certain degree.



This week, Microsoft has told Business Insider that Minecraft has increased to 112 million monthly users an increase of 20 million over the last time they announced those figures in October 2018. This is a game that's more than a decade old, but is still relevant.



There are many reasons for the recent popularity of Minecraft. A new update was released around the ten-year anniversary and included a lot more content. PewDiePie, a 100 million-subscriber YouTuber, is credited with making Fortnite a part of the "influencer" scene. His channel was devoted to Minecraft for the last few months. And then there's the slow fade of Fortnite as players transition out of that megahit and back to other games, Minecraft among them.



The growth of Minecraft is more impressive given that on most platforms, it isn't actually free, unlike Fortnite. Although some may attribute Microsoft for including it in the Xbox Game Pass to increase its player base however, others might not.



Fortnite seems to be aware that Minecraft is attracted by players. This is why we've seen the emergence and commitment to creating Creative Mode in the game. The most common comment I hear from Minecraft players is that it's a game people like to revisit after some time. In this case it was an effect of snowballs where so many players returned to the game together that it was as if old friends could all join the game at the same time and have the same enjoyment today like they did a few years ago.



Although it may have seemed odd at the time, Microsoft's purchase of Minecraft for $2.5 billion was a smart choice. They now have one of the most played games in the world. I am willing to bet that 112 million players per month is more than Fortnite currently has, and possibly only is competing with mobile titles at the same level. It's incredible.



Expect Minecraft to be around forever, and to continue to be relevant in the coming releases such as Minecraft Dungeons and Minecraft Earth which is an AR play that will take aim at Pokemon Go in the next.
