Wellness Effects of EMF Radiation
The radiation from RF-EMF can cause damaged DNA, heat to the tissues and can disrupt the blood-brain-barrier. These effects are real, and ARPANSA is active in collaborating in discussions with EHS communities, medical experts as well as researchers. RF-EMF causes DNA damage
exposed to electromagnetic fields that are created by man (EMFs) can cause DNA damage as well as health effects. EMFs can affect intracellular ionic concentrations, which are essential to ensure a cell's electrochemical balance. It can also cause disruption to cell homeostasis and result to DNA damage. The exposure to radiation from RF-EMF has been associated with changes in the male germ cell's development. This results in the differentiation of the germ cell into spermatozoa as well functioning maturation when the spermatozoa pass through the epididymis. To investigate the effect of RF-EMF exposure on male germ cell development, a specially-built waveguide machine was designed to expose unrestrained mice to RF EME with a dose of 2.2 W/kg.

In a study that was conducted recently, researchers discovered that exposure to RF-EME caused the oxidation of DNA in the spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation increased by 18% after a week of treatment, and by 23% after five weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

Despite this, RF-EMF radiation is not yet considered a carcinogen. However, several studies have shown that exposure to RF-EMF radiation can damage DNA health in variety of cell varieties. In one study researchers subjected Vero cells to an EMF that was 100Hz, for 45 minutes. They evaluated DNA damage at 48 hours following exposure to determine if exposure had a negative effect on DNA integrity.

The effect of RF-EMF on tissue heating
Although the effects of RF EMF are typically thought to be thermal, a few studies have revealed that non-thermal influences are also present. These effects may account for some of the unresolved observations in epidemiological studies on EMF hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting systematic reviews.

The non-thermal effects of RF-EMF may occur on the cell's membrane. This is a field which has already been extensively examined. Particularly the electrochemical properties of cell membranes is being studied. It is believed that energy generated by RF-EMF greater than 1 MHz is transmitted into the tissues through dielectric and ionic dissipation. Studies of the theory have suggested that the energy that is transferred to tissues could be as high as 200 kV/m.


The electrical properties of tissues are controlled through the distribution and composition of water molecules, and other molecules within the body. This determines how well absorbed EMR RF is by various tissues. Tissues with higher conductivity tend to absorb more field, and thus cause more of an impact. This is why the level of heating in tissues doesn't increase continuously from outside to inside the body, but occurs in hot areas. Bone and fatty tissues are less susceptible to RF heating as compared to other tissues, since they are low in water content.

The intensity of the field's penetration is determined by the strength and frequency of field. Muscle tissue absorbs more energy than other tissues, and converts it to heat more efficiently. Typically the depth of penetration for RF EMF is determined in millimeters (mm). However, the higher the frequency, the deeper the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have found that RF EMF can alter the blood-brain-barrier changing sleep patterns as well as neurotransmitter levels. Furthermore to this, the effects on the effects of EMF affect brain function are linked to neurodegenerative disorders. For instance, EMF from mobile phones could affect the electroencephalogram's activity and sleep patterns, as well as the activity of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at Vienna University have studied the effects of RF-EMF exposure in brain cells. They also looked at the effects of ELF EMF on nervous system. But, this effect did not occur when using Evans blue-based injections.

Despite these findings, RF-EMF does not have a clear mechanism for disrupting the BBB. Research suggests that EMF exposure may increase erythrocyte cell membrane permeability, which may influence the BBB and increase the efflux of calcium ions. Additionally, the presence of a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer within the brain has also been connected to increasing the permeability of the BBB.
