Minecraft's massive Super Duper Graphics Pack is no more after two years of delays. Mojang decided that the visual overhaul was too complex and difficult to implement. The developers "aren't happy" with the performance of the upgrade across platforms, and chose to axe the project rather than offer inconsistent quality.
The goal of the pack was to allow 4K playback on Xbox One X and to add more sophisticated visual effects like highlights, atmospheric effects, and water.
There is hope for an upgrade to graphics in the near future. Mojang said it was "looking at different ways" to give Minecraft an updated look, and that it has information on improving the gameplay on different platforms "very soon." While the game will not be kept in its current look for a long time (however charming it might be) it may take a lot longer before it can be up to speed with modern technology.
