The original 1993 Doom game, which formed the basis for nearly three decades of shooters, is still alive and well. The game has been translated to almost every platform imaginable but it's much more than just a meme. Community mods such as Brutal Doom, which has access to the source code for the original game, have made the original game's popularity after it was overtaken by more modern games. The latest update to the beloved shooter has added modern ray tracing lighting effects.
This is not the first time that we have seen high-tech lighting mixed with low-tech visuals. The famously blocky Minecraft has official Nvidia-branded RTX support, and Nvidia has rebuilt Quake II to show how full-blown path-tracing could look like. Every PC player can download the Doom mod for no cost. It's particularly dramatic in Doom's sci fi setting that is it's a Martian colony infested by ravenous monsters. Shadows and reflections from plasma ammunition, fireballs, and lava pools demonstrate how effective lighting can be in the basic polygonal environments of Doom.

The PrBoom mod is developed by the programmer Sultim Tsyrendashiev, who's also integrated support for Nvidia DLSS as well as other popular tweaks, like an always-available in-game flashlight. You'll still require a powerful PC to run the mod to its fullest, though DLSS can help ease the load. You can still play the first three episodes of Doom. However you may need to change the settings file to ensure optimal performance. You can download the mod files as well as the source code from Github.
