Health Effects of EMF Radiation
RF-EMF radiation can cause damages to DNA and tissue and can disrupt the blood-brain-barrier. These are real-world effects, and ARPANSA is actively involved within the EHS group, the medical professionals and researchers. ARPANSA will continue to examine research regarding the health effects of EMF radiation.

DNA damage is caused by RF-EMF

exposed to electromagnetic fields that are created by man (EMFs) is associated with DNA damage as well as negative health effects. EMFs can disrupt the intracellular ionic concentrations that are crucial to maintain a cell's electrochemical balance. This can cause disruption to cell homeostasis and result in DNA damage. Additionally exposure to EMFs is also linked to an increase in the production of free radicals as well as reactive oxygen species (ROS).

The exposure to radiation from RF-EMF has been linked with alterations in male germ cells' development. This is due to the development of germ cells into spermatozoa, as well functioning maturation when the spermatozoa travel throughout the epididymis. To study the sensitivity of RF-EMF exposure to the development of male germ cells, a specially-built waveguide machine was constructed to expose non-restrained mice to RF EME at 2.2 W/kg.

In a study that was conducted recently, researchers have discovered exposure to RF-EME causes the oxidation of DNA in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation was increased by 18% after a week of treatment, and by 23% after 5 weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

Despite this, RF-EMF radiation is not yet recognized as a true carcinogen. However, several studies have found that exposure to RF-EMF radiation can damage the integrity of DNA in range of cell types. In one such study researchers subjected Vero cell lines to EMF at 100 Hz over about 45 minutes. They evaluated DNA damage within 48 hours of exposure to determine if exposure affected DNA integrity.

The RF-EMF effect causes the heating of tissues
Although the effects of RF-EMF are typically thought as thermal in nature, some studies have demonstrated that non-thermal effects may also be evident. These factors could be responsible for some of the unresolved observations in the epidemiological study of EMF hypersensitivity. Therefore, it is important to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting a systematic review.

The non-thermal effects of RF-EMF may be mediated by the cell membrane. This is a field which has already been extensively studied. Particularly the electrochemical behavior of cell membranes is being studied. It is believed that energy generated by RF-EMF greater than 1 MHz gets transferred into the tissues through dielectric dissipation and ionic discharge. The theoretical studies have indicated that the energy that is transferred to tissues could be up to 200 kV/m.

The electrical properties of tissues are controlled in the form and quantity of water molecules and ions, and other molecules within the body. This determines how absorbed RF EMR is by different tissues. Tissues with higher conductivity tend to absorb more field, and thus cause more of an impact. This is the reason why the amount of heat generated by tissue doesn't increase continuously from outside to inside the body and is only noticeable in hot areas. Bone and fatty tissue are less prone to RF heating as compared to other tissues, since they are low in water content.

The intensity of the field's electromagnetic energy depends on the strength and frequency that the electromagnetic field has. electricity sensitivity absorbs more radiation than most tissues, and converts it to heat more efficiently. Usually the depth of penetration of RF-EMF is measured in millimeters (mm). But, the higher the frequency, more shallow the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have found that RF-EMF can disrupt the blood-brain barrier, altering sleep patterns and neurotransmitter levels. Furthermore, the effects on the effects of EMF affect brain function are associated with neurodegenerative disorders. For instance, EMF from mobile phones can affect electroencephalogram activity and sleep patterns, in addition to the activities of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at Vienna University have studied the effects of exposure to RF-EMF in brain cells. They also looked at the effects of ELF EMF on the brain system. Although the cellular mechanisms involved are not completely known however, there is an obvious association between ELF-EMF exposure and depletion of myelin. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. There are, however, proven methods for regenerating myelin within the brain.

Researchers have discovered that exposure to the frequency of 900 MHz EMF caused a rise in the permeability of the BBB and raised the signs of neuronal injury in rodents. They also observed an increase in the release of albumin to neurons. Additionally, they observed that after 30 minutes of exposure at 900 MHz, 99mTc-MIBI increased its diffusion to the cerebral cortex. However this effect didn't happen with Evans blue injections.

Despite these findings, RF EMF does not have a clear mechanism to disrupt the BBB. The evidence suggests that nonthermal EMF exposure may increase erythrocyte cell membrane permeability, which could influence the BBB and increase the efflux of calcium-ion. Moreover, the presence of a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer within the brain has been associated with increasing the permeability of BBB.
