Amazon announces Fire TV, a games and video streaming set-top box

Amazon today unveiled the Fire TV, an Android-based set-top box that supports video streaming and games.
The Fire TV is available from today for $99 and there is a controller for US$40 that is required for certain games. It also allows users to access Amazon's GameCircle social gaming service.
Fire runs "Mojito" - version 3.0 of the Android-based Kindle Fire OS. According to Amazon it will make it "simple for developers to port their services and games to Fire TV."
It is equipped with the quad-core Qualcomm Krait 300 CPU with 1.7GHz, 2 GB RAM and 8GB of storage. There is also a Qualcomm Adreno 332 GPU as well as a dual-band wireless radio. Two antennas enable 1080p streaming over 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi.
The Fire also offers HDMI and optical audio, with support for Dolby Digital Plus and 7.1 surround sound pass-through, as well as an Ethernet port as well as a USB 2.0 port.
Amazon says that the Fire TV will not compete with gaming consoles. Instead, it is targeted at people who don't own an actual console, but are able to play games on a smartphone, tablet or any other mobile device.
Games that are available on Fire TV so far include Minecraft: Pocket Edition; Asphalt 8 Airborne, and an endless running game based on Pixar's Monsters University.
Amazon Game Studios is also creating original games for the box, like a hybrid first-person shooter/tower defense game called Sev zero.
Amazon said that the average cost of the Fire TV game was US$1.85. Prices start at US$0.99 and there will be free-to-play games.
2K Games, Disney, Double Fine Productions, Electronic Arts, Sega, Telltale Games, and Ubisoft are all producing games for the Fire, and Amazon said "thousands" of games would be available by the end of next month.
The remote of the device has integrated voice search and the Fire will allow access to images stored on Amazon Cloud Drive, its X-Ray service for movies and TV shows, and its streaming service.
The Twitch app will be available soon alongside other services like Amazon Instant Video, Netflix and Hulu, MLB.TV and the WWE Network.
Fire TV will offer Pandora, iTunes Radio, as well as songs purchased on Amazon from May.
