Health Effects of EMF Radiation
The radiation from RF-EMF can cause damage to DNA, increase the temperature of tissues, and disrupt the blood-brain barrier. These are real-world effects, and ARPANSA is active in collaborating in discussions with EHS communities, medical experts and researchers. ARPANSA will continue to review research on the health effects of EMF radiation.

RF-EMF can cause DNA damage
Exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are associated with DNA damage and other adverse health adverse effects. EMFs can disrupt the intracellular ionic levels, which are crucial to maintain a cell's electrochemical balance. This can alter the balance of cell metabolism, resulting to DNA destruction. Moreover exposure to EMFs is also associated with an increase in the production of free radicals as well as reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Exposure to RF-EMF radiation has been associated with changes in the male germ cell's development. This involves the development of germ cells into spermatozoa, aswell functioning maturation as spermatozoa pass across the epididymis. To determine the effects of RF-EMF on male germ cells, a specially-built waveguide machine was designed for the exposure of mice that were not restrained to RF-EME at 2.2 W/kg.

In a recent study, researchers found that exposure to RF EME caused oxidative DNA damage in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation increased by 18% after one week of treatment and by 23% after five weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).

Although the radiation emitted by RF-EMF isn't yet recognized as a true carcinogen. However, several studies have shown that exposure to RF-EMF radiation can damage DNA health in variety of cell types. In one of these studies researchers subjected Vero cells with an EMF that was 100Hz, for 45 minutes. They assessed DNA damage for 48 hours after exposure to determine if exposure affected DNA integrity.

The effect of RF-EMF on tissue heating
While the effects of RF EMF are usually believed to be thermal, a few studies have demonstrated that non-thermal effects may also be present. These factors could be responsible for certain of the unsolved findings in epidemiological studies on EMF hypersensitivity. This is why it is crucial to consider the non-thermal effects when conducting an extensive review.

The non-thermal effects that RF-EMF can have may be felt at the cell's membrane. Click for source is an area which has already been extensively investigated. In particular the electrochemical behavior of cell membranes has been studied. The current understanding is that energy from RF-EMFs greater than 1 MHz is transferred to the tissue through dielectric as well as ionic dissipation. Previous theoretical analyses indicated that the energy transferred to the tissue could be up to 200 kV/m.

The electric properties of tissues are regulated by the composition and distribution of water molecules, ions, and other molecules within the body. This determines how absorbent EMR from RF is absorbed by different tissues. Organs with greater conductivity are likely to absorb more field, and thus cause more of an impact. This is why the degree of tissue heating is not constant between the outside and inside, but occurs in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissue are less susceptible to heating by RF as compared to other tissues, since they are not as water-based. content.

The intensity of penetration of electromagnetic fields depends on the strength and frequency of the field. Muscle tissue is more able to absorb field energy than other tissues, and converts it into heat more effectively. Typically, the depth of penetration of RF-EMF is measured as millimeters (mm). The higher the frequency, the more shallow the penetration.

RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption

Researchers have found that RF-EMF can alter the blood-brain-barrier, altering sleep patterns and neurotransmitter levels. In addition, the effects of EMF affect brain function have been linked to neurodegenerative disorders. For instance, EMF from mobile phones can affect electroencephalogram activity and sleep patterns, in addition to the actions of nitric Oxide and xanthin oxidase.

Researchers at Vienna University have studied the effects of RF-EMF exposure on brain cells. They also examined what effects ELF EMF on the nervous system. While the mechanisms of the cell that play a role are not fully understood however, there is an obvious relationship between exposure to ELF EMF and myelin depletion. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. There are, however, proven methods for regenerating myelin inside the brain.

Researchers have observed that exposure to 900 MHz EMF increased the permeability of BBB and increased symptoms of neuronal damage in rats. They also observed an increase in the extravasation of albumin into neurons. Additionally, they observed that after 30 minutes of 900 MHz exposure 99mTcMIBI increased its permeation to the cerebral cortex. However this effect didn't occur when using Evans blue injections.

Despite these findings, RF-EMF has no clear mechanism to disrupt the BBB. Research suggests that EMF exposure may increase erythrocyte cell membrane permeability, which may alter the BBB and enhance the efflux of calcium-ion. Moreover, the presence of a 99mTcMIBI radiotracer inside the brain has also been connected to an increase in the permeability of the BBB.
