Hack Attack on Sony And Xbox

Hack attack on Sony and Xbox

20 January 2015

Hacking group Lizard Squad has been hit by a scandalous attack that exposed the entire database of users who signed up to use its services.
TALKEGYPT.NET

The group claimed to have knocked out the Xbox and PlayStation gaming networks offline around Christmas.

Soon after it was set up a website that let anyone who paid for its software to deluge other sites with data.

The attack that exposed the customer's list is only one of the many targeted at the organization or its tools.

Address list

Brian Krebs, an investigative journalist, broke the story about the hacking of the Lizard Stresser database. The Stresser allowed those who paid for it to overload websites or kick people off their sites with information.

Krebs did not provide a name. Krebs did not reveal who accessed the information, but said he had acquired an archive of the entire list of 14,241 people who had signed up.

Anyone who visited the Stresser website was warned via text message in the login box. It advised users to change their password that they created when they registered.

Krebs stated in a blog post that the Lizard Squad had not taken enough measures to protect login and contact information given by users.

"All registered usernames and passwords were stored in plain text," said Mr Krebs and added that only a few hundred of the people who registered paid for access to the site.

Tech news site Ars Technica also got hold of the database dump, which was posted for a brief time on the Mega file-sharing service. It stated that most people who used it were gamers who were trying to stop their rivals from playing a specific game. Minecraft servers were a popular target of the Stresser users according to the report.

Ars Technica said the dump of the database could create problems for anyone who used it, as the IP addresses of a lot of them were poorly obscured and could, with a little work, be recovered.

The petty theft of the database comes just after other computer experts took apart the tools Lizard Squad has been using. One of them exposed the source program's code to attack people on IRC chat networks.

Eric Zhang, a computer science student was able to swiftly list all the names of those who signed up for Stresser with a very simple script.

He said, "That took only 10 minutes."

He also said that he was not surprised that the entire database was stolen because he checked the site and saw that public access to the server was accessible.

He stated that the site was run by someone with no formal experience in software engineering.

He added, "Most of their work is not particularly impressive." "Anyone can do this. All you need is time."

Mr. Krebs said that Lizard Squad was being targeted because security personnel were annoyed by their sudden popularity.

He said: "There seems to be a general feeling within the security research community that these people are way over their heads, and when we're unable to bring to justice a bunch of teenagers in Western nations who are doing a slap in the face to everyone else it's a sad situation."

He added that the time taken to carry out investigations and identify members of the group helped the group survive. Recent Lizard Squad arrests seemed to have only resulted in the capture of some of its hangers on , but left some of its core members unharmed.
