Fake Guilds In WoW

I'm not a fan of calling attention to trolls on the internet; I think they're vile little beasts who need to be dealt with in a traditional DnD way with a roll of an equilateral die with six sides and a casting of an arrow that's flaming. One thing that trolls are known for that are causing me to scream on forums is a fake WoW guild.



I won't mention the guild's name, nor give you their location as I don't want them to track me down in game or getting a bigger head. What they do to make the frack out of everyone (and that was my obligatory Battlestar Galactica reference for the week) is pretty lame . they send out updates to bosses they've not killed. They claim to have defeated Brutallus in the present. They even have a clearly edited kill image to prove it. They don't. If you look at the armory profiles, you will see that no one in their guild has Kara-level gear.



This guild will make posts in threads that are in progress that fill pages after pages of space. These threads will eventually have to be closed as they grow and new threads are made. The trolls have the ability to start everything over again. They are not noticed by the majority of the people within the realm, however, they are the 1% who give them the attention they desire.



What can we do about this?

We've tested a few options. We've tried a few different things. "Yeah it's funny!. Please go away. Following the subsequent flurry of flames and general irritation the idea was put forward to switch to WoWWiki.



WoWWiki is great because it allows us to edit and correct the trolls as they edited in false information. The temporary ban was imposed after the trolls began to make too many edits. They continued to alter the Wiki page of the realm for several days but it didn't stop them from doing it again.



Blizzard should enforce forum rules better to get around them. They rarely participate in forums for realms, or, when they do, it is not as visible as the Customer Service forums and the Wrath of the Lich King forums. If they could intensify their enforcement, the impact trolls like this have on communities would be decreased. It won't eliminate them, but at least long-running threads wouldn't need to be trashed because some immature folks think they're being funny.
