1.Fotosfer
Kita memerlukan alat bantu dan penapis (filter) untuk melihat bentuk Matahari.
Lapisan atmosfer Matahari yang terlihat
dan berwarna kuning disebut Fotosfer.
Lapisan Fotosfer merupakan lapisan tipis dengan tebal 500 km dan suhu sekitar 6.000 K,
2.Kromosfer
Lapisan Kromosfer dapat terlihat melalui filter khusus.
Pada waktu gerhana Matahari total,Kromosfer tampak sebagai gelang merah yang mengelilingi Bulan.
Kromosfer merupakan lapisan yang berada di sebelah luar Fotosfer, dan dianggap sebagai atmosfer Matahari bagian dalam.
Kromosfer terletak di antara ketinggian 500-2.000 km dengan suhu sekitar 10.000 K,
3.Korona
Korona merupakan lapisan Matahari yang paling luar.
Warnanya keabu-abuan dan berbentuk seperti mahkota.
Keindahan korona hanya terlihat ketika gerhana Matahari total terjadi, saat Bulan menutupi Fotosfer, melalui alat Koronagraf.
Korona menjulang sampai ketinggian 700.000 km dengan suhu sekitar 1.000.000 K.
