Warcraft: Khadgar's Life Before Leading the Kirin Tor

One of the most powerful magi in World of Warcraft is the human Khadgar. Khadgar has been a prominent figure ever since the First War ravaged the land as one of the main defenses of Azeroth during Warlords of Draenor and Legion, but has taken some time off during these last two expansions. This will change when he makes his major return to the spotlight in Dragonflight. Although it is not yet known what his story will bring, it will have huge implications for the development of Azeroth.

Khadgar was not always the powerful mage World of Warcraft players have encountered. He was a child who loved magic and wanted to learn more about it. He was an avid reader, but his life was soon to be out of control when the time came for him to become a champion for the people. The world of Azeroth might have suffered a worse fate without him.

Khadgar's Apprenticeship

When Khadgar was 17, he was sent to apprentice under the great wizard Medivh. To many, including Khadgar, Medivh seemed like nothing more than a kind and eccentric old man. Upon arriving at Karazhan, Medivh would put him to work cleaning his library. As Khadgar wandered, he stumbled upon a room that held a vision of humans fighting against the orcs, and it looked like he was leading the charge. This shocked Khadgar, as he had no idea why he would be leading this army into battle.

One day, Khadgar was attacked by Medivh and accused of being a thief, but the sage quickly apologized after remembering who Khadgar was. He took him to the south of the kingdom, where he was able to climb up on gryphons to make amends for the mistake. Khadgar was able to meet his first warlocks and orcs. They also met the Champion Anduin Lothar, who would entice Medivh to join Stormwind’s defenses. Medivh refused. Lothar would then request Khadgar to take over as Medivh's caretaker in the event that he made controversial decisions.

Medivh began to act more erratic and he would then be in a secluded place for days. Khadgar began to question Medivh's actions and be concerned that something was wrong with Medivh. He went to meet Garona, half-orc, and began to comprehend what Medivh was doing. Khadgar came to the realization that the wizard was planning to open an entrance between Azeroth and Draenor, and ran to King Llan Wrynn to gather an army of soldiers led by Anduin Lothar.

The group fought Medivh and found that he was able to establish an psychic connection to Gul'Dan, a warlock. Khadgar took on Medivh and was able to plunge an axe into the heart of his master. However, Khadgar would lose his life force and magical energy. He would leave Karazhan with the energy he had lost and would bury his master.

The Repercussions of Medivh's Death

The orcs would go on to destroy Stormwind and force the humans to flee to the kingdom of Lordaeron. Khadgar would flee with them, but the battle with Medivh would forever alter him. His life force would remain drained, leaving his face to take on the appearance of an old man with white hair. Luckily, he would still maintain the strength and agility of a young man.

Khadgar would become the official liaison of the Council of Six to Anduin Lothhar. He would be a major factor in the Second War's defeat of Horde and would lead the orcs to the Dark Portal. There, Anduin Lothar would lose his life but Khadgar destroyed the portal. He would oversee construction of Nethergarde Keep in defense against another Draenor invasion. This invasion would be quick.

Khadgar would later lead an expedition into Draenor to stop the Horde once and for all, after they tried to invade the third time. Khadgar would be forced to close the portal from the other side and cut his forces off from Azeroth. The Alliance believed that he was dead and would make statues to honor his memory. They did not realize that Khadgar's tale was far from finished and he would be one of the main protagonists for many World of Warcraft expansions.
