The procession started in the middle of the night and crossed many lands as the sun rose, including the forest areas of the Central Shroud to the north. The journey lasted about 30 minutes.
The procession concluded under the Guardian Tree the most sacred place in the woods.
The game's Twitter community took to social media to share their dismay at the number of people who joined the procession.
One wrote: "The #FFXIV community never ceases to be awestruck by me. This memorial service was a huge success thanks to the large number of people who attended. My view distance isn't big enough to accommodate this many people! May the fallen player rest in peace. My condolences to everyone affected. Everyone, stay safe!
The crowd was believed to be in the hundreds, was dressed only in dark, funeral-appropriate attire.
Another participant said: 'This was my first experience of something like this. There were people who filled up three zones of the base game, which are large in general. Many people attended to express condolences and support to their fellow adventurers, their families, and their friends.
The Final Fantasy funeral procession comes roughly one month after an assemblage of Japanese school children held their graduation ceremony in Minecraft after coronavirus concerns caused the cancellation of the on-campus ceremony.
