RF-EMF radiation can cause damage to DNA, increase the temperature of tissues, and disrupt the blood brain barrier. These effects are real and ARPANSA is actively engaged within the EHS communities, medical experts and researchers. ARPANSA will continue examine research regarding the health effects caused by EMF radiation.
RF-EMF can cause DNA damage
Exposure to man-made electromagnetic fields (EMFs) is associated with DNA damage as well as negative health effects. EMFs can alter intracellular ionic concentrations, which are vital to maintain a cell's electrochemical balance. This can alter the balance of cell metabolism, resulting damages to the DNA. Furthermore, exposure to EMFs can cause an increase in the production of free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS).
The exposure to radiation from RF-EMF has been linked with alterations in the development of male germ cells. This is due to the development of germ cells into spermatozoa as well functional maturation when the spermatozoa travel throughout the epididymis. To investigate the sensitivity of RF-EMF exposure to male germ cells, a specifically-designed waveguide machine was designed for the exposure of mice without restriction to RF-EMF at 2.2 W/kg.
In a recent study researchers discovered that exposure to RF-EME causes oxidative DNA damage in spermatozoa. Sperm DNA fragmentation increased by 18% after one week of treatment and by 23 percent after five weeks. Furthermore, DNA damage in mitochondria was observed by measuring the level of a biomarker, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG).
However, the RF-EMF radiation has not yet been considered to be a carcinogen. However, several studies have found that exposure to RF-EMF can affect DNA health in range of cell types. In one such study scientists were exposed Vero cell lines to EMF that was 100Hz, for about 45 minutes. They measured DNA damage at 48 hours following exposure to determine if the exposure affected DNA integrity.
The effect of RF-EMF on tissue heating
While the effects of RF EMF are usually considered to have thermal origins, some studies have demonstrated that non-thermal influences are also evident. These factors could be responsible for certain of the unsolved findings in the epidemiological study of EMF hypersensitivity. It is therefore important to take into account non-thermal effects when conducting an extensive review.
The non-thermal effects of RF-EMF could occur at the cell membrane. This is an area where research has been thoroughly studied. Particularly the electrochemical properties of cell membranes has been studied. The current understanding is that RF-EMF energy that exceeds 1 MHz is transferred to the tissue through dielectric and the dissipation of ions. The theoretical studies have indicated that the energy transferred to tissues could be as high as 200 kV/m.
The electrical properties of tissues are controlled through the distribution and composition of water molecules, and other molecules in the body. This determines how absorbent EMR RF is by various tissues. The tissues with the highest conductivity tend to absorb more of the field and cause more of an effect. This is why the degree of heat generated by tissue does not increase steadily as it moves from the exterior to the body however, it is more prevalent in hot spots. Bone and fatty tissue is less susceptible to RF heating than other tissues because they are low in water content.
The depth of penetration of electromagnetic fields is determined by the frequency and strength of field. Muscle tissue absorbs more field energies than the other tissue and converts it to heat more efficiently. Usually the penetration depth of RF-EMF is measured as millimeters (mm). However, the greater the frequency, the deeper the penetration.
RF-EMF causes blood-brain barrier disruption
Researchers have discovered that RF EMF can disrupt the blood-brain barrier which can alter sleep patterns and neurotransmitter levels. Additionally, the effects of EMF on brain activity are linked to neurodegenerative diseases. For example, EMF from mobile phones could affect the electroencephalogram's activity and sleep patterns, and the activity of nitric oxide and xanthin oxidase.
Researchers at the Vienna University have studied the effects of exposure to RF-EMF in brain cells. They also looked at the effects of ELF EMFs on the brain system. Although the cellular mechanisms that are involved aren't fully known but there is a clear relationship between exposure to ELF EMF and depletion of myelin. This relationship might account for the electro-hypersensitivity symptoms of electro-hypersensitivity. Fortunately, there are some proven methods for regenerating myelin in the brain.
Researchers have discovered that exposure to the frequency of 900 MHz EMF caused a rise in the permeability of BBB and also increased the symptoms of neuronal damage in rats. They also observed an increase in the extravasation of neuronal albumin. Further, they found in 30 minutes exposure to 900 MHz 99mTcMIBI increased its penetration to the cerebral cortex. However this effect did not happen with Evans blue-based injections.
Despite emf sensitivity treatment , RF-EMF does not have a clear mechanism to disrupt the BBB. Evidence suggests that non-thermal EMF exposure can increase erythrocyte membrane permeability, which may alter the BBB and also increase the efflux of calcium-ion. Additionally, the presence of a 99mTc-MIBI radiotracer in the brain has been associated with increasing the permeability of the BBB.
